Customers Review:

A business/economics journalist, Adam Davidson does a lot of speaking and a lot of writing, but this seems to be his first book. He is the founding cohost of NPR’s Planet Money podcast. He also apparently gives paid speeches and writes for the New Yorker magazine. He’s got enough cachet that Charles Duhigg, Daniel H. Pink and Tom Peters all blurbed his book, and those are pretty good blurbers. And I heard him interviewed today on NPR’s Here and Now where he could describe and plug his book.Adam Davidson’s basic idea is that many of us can find a niche in today’s economy where we can profit from our passion. Unlike a few decades ago, we aren’t limited to an industrial economy of scale where we are just fungible cogs in a giant corporate wheel. Instead we can take advantage of human-scale opportunities where we offer more crafted products or services at a premium price to a discriminating clientele. It’s a good idea, optimistic and inspiring, and Adam Davidson has found plenty of examples to back up his idea. The stories he tells about those exemplary people are compelling. But his approach is a lot like that of Malcolm Gladwell (though his writing style is rather different). That is, he gives his thesis, tells his stories, and thinks the latter adequately support the former. But they don’t.That’s the trouble with stories. You can find stories to support almost any idea. It’s like the stump speeches we hear political candidates give. They will tell stories about voters they talked to who had exactly the problem that the candidate has the perfect solution to. That’s all very fine, but any candidate can find and tell those stories. The stories seem to mean something, but they don’t.If you like to read stories and don’t care much about learning new things and applying them to your life, this book is good for that. Plenty of good stories, told well. It’s a quick and easy read, and I’m glad I read it. I agree with the basic idea — I think the modern economy does give us more of a chance to build a unique career path where we can make money doing things we think are important.Still, that’s a very hard thing to do. Ideas like this one are easy in the abstract but hard in the real world. It’s always that way. Ideas are a dime a dozen. It’s execution that is rare. Getting inspiration from a book like this seems valuable, but what happens when you try to find your niche and you spend all your money and time and find nothing but failure instead? What then?Again, I think of political candidates. Elizabeth Warren, for example, likes to tout her plans. An issue comes up, and “I’ve got a plan for that”, she says. But so what? As boxer Mike Tyson said, “everybody’s got a plan until they get punched in the face”. Plans never work — you can’t live your life according to plan. As John Lennon sang, “life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” (though John Lennon took the quote from someone else). So this book might inspire you to follow your passion and get you going, but when the going gets rough, this book will be little help. The book gives some practical guidance, but the rules are general and amorphous. Like set your prices high. Find a low-competition, high-margin niche market (that rarest of beasts!). Fire bad customers as well as find new ones. Not that that advice is that bad, but for entrepreneurs the main foe to fight is failure. Most new ventures fail. Learning how to overcome difficulties and how to pivot to avoid pitfalls are the best lessons to learn. But nobody wants to read or write stories about failure. Too depressing.Trouble is, reading success stories and rules that blaze a path to success generates unwarranted optimism. This is harder than it looks. Much harder. However strong your passion.
Ok, I haven’t read the book yet, but I heard Adam’s interview on a podcast. He goes into the history and dig out the secret smarts of individuals who with their wit to not only hone their survival skills but transformed themselves and their dying businesses to re-establish them into thriving businesses of 21st centuries. But at the bottom of all this, there lies individual’s passion and innate love that drives one’s ability to recognize the niche and propel the growth by continual innovations (big or small).I can’t wait to get my copy and get to know more.-SM

Book Description

Review “Hot off his brilliant book, Crisis of Responsibility, David Bahnsen turns his keen eye on the crisis that is Elizabeth Warren and her ‘plans’ to dismantle the free market system. It’s a must read for those who want to know what might be in store for America under a Warren presidency. Warren is a peculiar mix of progressive passions and pathologies: the populist technocrat. Rather than a pitchfork, she wields her ‘plans,’ which have less to do with actual public policy and more to do with making her agenda sound less than radical than it really is. David does a masterful job of pulling back the curtain and exposing Warren’s plans for what they really are.”  — Jonah Goldberg, Asness Chair in Applied Liberty, American Enterprise Institute”David Bahnsen combines a cool-eyed sensibility with blessedly jargon-free prose to build an impregnable case against Elizabeth Warren. This is an impressive polemic.” — John Podhoretz, Editor-in-Chief, “Commentary””In this engaging and incisive book, David Bahnsen lays bare the damage an Elizabeth Warren presidency would do to this country. David clearly details how everyone one of Warren’s favored policies—from Medicare for All to the Green New Deal and beyond—would bury the middle class in taxes and red tape. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in politics and policy—and adroitly explains what’s at stake in the 2020 presidential election.” — Sally C. Pipes, CEO, Pacific Research Institute”What a great political and economic anomaly: The populist Left, championed by Elizabeth Warren, is determined to vanquish wealth—the thing most essential to the investment, productivity, and growth desperately needed to underwrite the evermore ambitious progressive agenda. Here, David Bahnsen, a brilliant financial analyst with a keen political eye, provides the antidote to Senator Warren’s nostrums, and a Hazlitt-esque Capital in One Lesson for the rest of us.” — Andrew C. McCarthy, National Review, New York Times Bestselling Author”If Elizabeth Warren has a ‘plan for everything,’ then David Bahnsen has the response. David’s book is a thorough, fair-minded, and comprehensive rebuttal to Warren’s ideological project. It’s a serious response to serious proposals, and it’s a vital read for every American who’s engaged in the battle of ideas.”  — David French, Senior Editor, The Dispatch”With her relentless insistence that she has ‘a plan’ for all aspects of American life, Elizabeth Warren has become the poster-child of the Democratic Party’s dramatic leftward rush. In this timely book, David Bahnsen dismantles Warren’s fanatical agenda brick by brick, revealing it to be ignorant, dangerous, innumerate and, ultimately, immoral.” — Charles Cooke, Editor, NationalReview.com”If you aren’t afraid of Senator Elizabeth Warren, you should be.  She has taken political populism and married it to the powerfully divisive engines of class envy and racial animus. For every real or perceived ill, Warren has a ‘plan’—every one of which expands the massive power of government into all aspects of American life, and entails a ruthless program of confiscation to pay for it.  That’s why it is important for every American to become acquainted with what she is saying. And that is why it is so important to read David Bahnsen, who clearly tackles her distortions, misstatements, and outright lies.  America was built on e pluribus unum; out of many, one. We are one people, one nation. But if Elizabeth Warren prevails, this unity will be fractured into innumerable bitterly divided camps ultimately controlled by an all-powerful central government.  All Americans should arm themselves with the facts and responses presented in David Bahnsen’s Elizabeth Warren: How Her Presidency Would Destroy the Middle Class and the American Dream. This is an impressive and important book.” — Dennis Prager, nationally syndicated radio talk show host, New York Times bestselling author, and president of PragerU”Elizabeth Warren: How Her Presidency Would Destroy the Middle Class and the American Dream is a serious, thorough, policy-driven critique of a major contender for the Democratic nomination. Conservatives will read it and fear what’s in store for them if she becomes president. Hopefully liberals will read it too, and take its warning to heart.”  — The National Review Read more About the Author David L. Bahnsen is the founder, managing partner, and Chief Investment Officer of The Bahnsen Group, a bi-coastal wealth management firm managing over $2 billion in client capital. He is annually recognized as one of the top advisors in the country by Barron’s, Forbes, and the Financial Times. He is a frequent economic and political writer for National Review, Forbes, and his very own Dividend CafĂ©. Customers Review:

A must read for anyone interested in Warren’s policies and understanding how the Dems are plotting to turn America into a socialist country. Very well researched book.
This book outlines many of the issues of being a financial illiterate vis-a-vie political rhetoric. Both parties use inflammatory language without much fact to back up their statements. As of this writing there are 607 billionaires in the USA. If you confiscate all their net worth it will not run the US government for a whole year and then what will you do the next year. This book is a good way to understand the exaggerated rhetoric you find in politics.
An excellent and well timed analysis of the current progressive position held by Elizabeth Warren and others in the radical progressive movement. AOC has said that the traditional democratic party is a “centrist conservative” party. This book provides an in depth analysis of the policy positions held by Warren and others in the progressive movement and what it means for the country.
A eye opening discussion of the beneficial side of Wall Street. Not dismissing bad but emphatic to the American Dream and hopeful of a continuation of a free and virtuous America.
As a strong 10th Amendment proponent, I do not usually get as much in a flurry over presidential elections as many of my friends and acquaintances. I did not vote for Trump, but understand and can sympathize with why many did. However…….. I just finished having David Bahnsen read me his new book on Democratic Presidential Candidate Elizabeth Warren. He discusses the topics of the financial crisis, wealth tax, environmentalism, healthcare, education, taxation, Silicon Valley, class warfare and much more. While he specifically, and in much detail, addresses many of Warren’s proposals line by line, still much can be gleaned generally on these subjects for anyone interested in the 2020 Presidential brouhaha we are in the midst of for the next several months. Bahnsen is quite articulate, cogent, and fair in his analysis; polemics at its finest, with grace. He goes way deeper than shallow and ambiguous and deceptive talking points. The book is a refreshing vaccine against “victimhood”, and a strong boost for human dignity. I finished the audio version and I ordered the hard copy today to have on hand.
“For every problem, real or imagined, it seems that Elizabeth Warren declares, “I have a plan for that.” In this concise expose’ David Bahnsen examines the most prominent of Senator Warren’s plans and the taxes and confiscations that she proposes to use to pay for them. Chapter by chapter, David fairly describes the policy positions proposed by the Senator, sourced to her own words, and then, in terms that are easy to understand given their complexity, David proceeds to explain why those proposals for America are a recipe for disaster. David is an expert in capital markets, and for this alone there is value in reading his analysis of Senator Warren’s policies affecting the economy, from her broad demonizing of “Wall Street” to legislation she supported following the 2008 financial crisis. But David’s talent for explaining complex subjects in simple terms extends beyond the expertise derived from his profession, for David is a scholar of the American experiment who not only condemns Warren’s policies as unworkable but explains why they are immoral as well. Even if Elizabeth Warren is not nominated to oppose Donald Trump in November, this book is worth reading because of its policy assessments that pertain to nearly every candidate currently running in the Democratic primaries.”
This book is worth every penny simply for the economic education it provides. I learned so much reading this book. It is clear, cogent, well-argued, logical, and persuasive. I highly recommend it. You will learn and you will be inspired by the vision that Bahnsen offers for America in our current climate. This is simply a superb little book. I can’t wait for Bahnsen’s next one!
What happens when a Wall Street financial manager steps way out of his depth and asserts that a presidential candidate is a threat to the American dream? A book with no evidence base whatsoever that ends up a rant of cherry-picked data and examples that fit his preconceived schema. It would appear that Elizabeth Warren is a threat to his version of the American dream. But he isn’t particularly convincing beyond that.

Awesome book! I am so happy I ordered it, it explains really nice how to make beautiful paper flowers. From the picture on the Amazon I thought it’s really thin, but actually it’s a thick book with a lot of information.
I’ve been anxiously waiting for the release of the book in the states for awhile and let me just say, this book is absolutely incredible! If I could give it 10 stars, I would. Everything from the paper to the pictures to the instructions is second to none. I can’t wait to start applying Jessie’s techniques to my own paper flowers. I will cherish this book for many many years.
I pre-ordered this book in August; it arrived today and did not disappoint. Its pages are beautifully photographed. Its instructions are comprehensive. Materials and techniques for creating and arranging a wide range of flowers and foliage are presented. If you plan to create crepe paper flowers, this book is an absolute must-have.
This book “Paper Flower Art” by Jessie Chui is so beautifully put together! She has put together very detailed instructions and step by step pictures explaining her process of making different focus flowers and greenery. I’m so excited to learn more and make many detailed crepe paper flowers!
Out of a half dozen books on the construction of paper flowers, Jesse’s book is superb!. She goes the distance and provides generous, marvellous examples and instructions. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel! A must have!
Love this book, excellent quality as far as a well designed hard back. But the contents are truly fantastic, well written, visual aids, templates. You will be designing beautiful flowers starting at the beginning.
I love looking at the beautiful flower arrangements, they are so realistic and inspirational! The photo instructions are easy to follow and the templates at the back of the book are super convenient. Anyone who loves flowers would love this book. Great gift idea too!
A beautiful book with many wonderful photographs. The instructions are clear and helpful. Great templates.

Book Description

Review “The final, riveting chapter of the Truly Devious murder series. Throughout this intricately woven, fast-paced whodunit, Johnson demonstrates how proximity to wealth and power can mold and bend one’s behavior, whether with good or―here largely―devious intent. The brainy secondary characters’ quirky talents and interests complement Stevie’s sleuthing skills; . . . they include diversity in socioeconomic background, mental health challenges, physical disability, and sexual orientation. A richly satisfying, Poirot-like ending for Johnson’s inspired and inspiring teen sleuth.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))”In this hotly anticipated trilogy finale, Johnson pulls out all the stops, filling the thrillingly nimble narrative with classic mystery conventions. A striking foray into an examination of what mysteries can ever truly be solved, and a satisfying send-off for a series that will be missed.” (Booklist)“Maureen Johnson brings her delectable ‘Truly Devious’ murder mystery trilogy to a thrilling conclusion, neatly tying together her dueling narrative threads, one set in 1936 and the other in the present day, with an action-packed finale during a blizzard at Ellingham Academy in the mountains of Vermont.”  (Buffalo News)”This will be essential reading for the many fans of the first two books. This trilogy ender is fun, satisfying, and a genuine treat for teens and adult mystery fans.” (School Library Journal)“The perfect mix of intimate character moments, intriguing epiphanies, and dangerous situations make it an overwhelmingly satisfying conclusion.” (Hypable)“This was an absolutely perfect finale to an engaging series.” (YA Books Central)”This inclusive, inventive, and vastly entertaining series has been a boon to YA literature. As a layered, complex character who solves crime while also battling anxiety, Stevie Bell reads like the redoubtable love child of Jessica Fletcher and Adrian Monk. There will hopefully be more Stevie Bell mysteries to come.” (Horn Book Magazine)Praise for TRULY DEVIOUS “Be still, my Agatha-Christie-loving beating heart.” (Bustle)“Jumping between past and present, Johnson’s novel is deliciously atmospheric, with a sprawling cast of complex suspects/potential victims, surprising twists, and a dash of romance. As in her Shades of London books, Johnson remains a master at combining jittery tension with sharp, laugh-out-loud observations.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Remember the first time reading Harry Potter and knowing it was something special? There’s that same sense of magic in the introduction of teen Sherlock-in-training Stevie Bell. Parallel mysteries unfold with cleverly written dialogue, page-turning brilliance and a young sleuth just as captivating as Hercule Poirot.” (USA Today (four stars)) Read more About the Author Maureen Johnson is the bestselling author of several novels, including 13 Little Blue Envelopes, the Truly Devious series, the Suite Scarlett series, and the Shades of London series. Customers Review:

OK, I seem to be in the minority here of being slightly disappointed by this trilogy’s finale. I was really excited to see how this book will conclude and to tie up all the loose ends. Instead, it felt like Maureen Johnson was cramming so much information into one book, there was so much drama involved both in the past and the present storylines, she was still revealing a lot of new information in the finale but also having to give us closure and resolve everything before the end of the book, leaving us feeling a little out of breath and…unsatisfied?Almost like…when you build up to something for so long and the climax, the best part of it, only lasts a few seconds, it feels so underwhelming. Makes you think, that’s it?Stevie solves the freaking murder! The murder of the century! And yet, we’re still discovering new things about Alice and her parents, and her birth, and who she really turns out to be, and I’m thinking what? Is that really necessary to move the story or the mystery forward? And then in present time, there’s the mystery of all these accidents that keep happening, and I feel like Johnson revealed a little too much at the beginning with that meeting between Stevie and her advisor making me guess who the villain is very early into the book. Then there’s David and his unnecessary drama. I mean, come on…so she made a mistake, but did she really? She wanted to get back to school, how’s that a crime? And she never ended up telling his dad ANYTHING. And she apologized like a million times. And yet he still appears halfway through the book only, and acts like a complete and total jerk to her for another third of the book, and then suddenly they’re making out again. It makes no sense! Their romance and connection were one of the things that I really loved about this trilogy and Johnson destroyed that here. Everything felt rushed at the end. All the revelations, the hook ups, the make ups, the closure she gave us was rushed and ruined it slightly for me.Did I still enjoy reading this? Yeah, I did. I love Maureen Johnson’s books and the first two parts in this trilogy make up for how badly executed this one is. But do I wish it was better? Yes. A thousand times yes.
And just like that the great mystery is solved and all it needs is a cookie for Elvis.“Hand in the Wall” presents it’s case giving us a satisfying conclusion to a kidnapping and murder plot that has carried Stevie and us readers through the first two books. With the Academy deemed unswfe and a snow storm locking everyone inside a settling not unlike an Agatha Christie novel sets the stage for a final showdown where the past and present collide and the truth about Alice is revealed.I really love these books and all the references to true crime that round out Stevie’s character as she and I are nearly the same person where it comes to all of that and I couldn’t wait to see how she would crack the case. Everything from the subtle misdirects and isolated setting made the tension extra thick for this final book and I couldn’t get through it fast enough.I loved how all the characters came together and some of those who were more in the background were able to prove their skills when tackling the final moments of the mystery with my only complaint being that of David. I have a weird relationship with him and the idea of he and Stevie together as I spent a good portion of the first two hoping they could make it work only to get to this one and praying they never crossed paths for the entirety of the story they are at odds until the last handful of pages where it’s the one loose end that’s tied up too quickly to make sense. These are really great books and like always I’m going to plug My Favorite Murder because it’s obvious Maureen is a fan and most of the murders Stevie discusses in this book are featured in their own episodes of the podcast.
Holy. Cow. This is the last book in this series, everything has been solved, AHHH.I ADORED THIS ENDING. I love how Maureen Johnson wrapped everything up, it all made sense and it left me gasping at some parts. Like wow she is such a talented author. I adore this series so much and even though I say all the time that I would never reread a thriller, I would 100% reread this mystery series just for the characters! I adore Janelle and Vi and Nate (omg NATEEEE) they are all just fantastic. The one character I never liked in this series is David (and in the end, I still don’t like him oops) but otherwise, this was just fantastic and everyone needs to read this series more. I ADORE IT SO MUCH.
I had been waiting for the final installment of this series and was worried that somehow it would not be as satisfying as I wanted. I’m happy to report that I’m wrong because Maureen Johnson has pulled off a phenomenal ending to the Truly Devious series. It was only in the final 50 pages where I finally was starting to suspect and put pieces together in the truth of who and why and when of the mysteries surrounding Ellingham Academy. Highly recommend for any lovers of mysteries.
One of the best conclusions I have read in a long time! I loved this book so much I couldn’t stop reading it and yet didn’t want it to end. The conclusion is highly satisfying with Johnson artfully trying up plot points and, even, tying it up in a bow to make the best gift ever. I love the environment of this book I wish I could visit Ellingham Academy. I both saw it coming and didn’t expect the culprit to be who they were-another became of Jonhson’s superb storytelling.

Two chapters in and riveted. The knowledge and lamen terms in which Suzanne writes is truly a gift! Her previous books have helped me avoid the dreaded statins and bhrt for men changed my life. I will always be grateful for these books which are nothing more then lessons and crash courses in health. The only other alternative is the current standard of care. Throwing pharmaceuticals at symptoms! Get this book and all the previous ones and learn what we SHOULD have been taught! Not told from an industry fueled by big pharma!!! Thanks Suzanne!
I can’t put this book down!! Such great information!! Easy to understand. I am 61 and will be living my life differently!!:) I have heart disease and have Alzheimer’s in my family. This book made me realize that I need to make some dramatic changes NOW!! Thanks Suzanne!!!:)
Suzanne Somers is the best celebrity to tout anti-aging and for years she has been doing so. I have been following imperative knowledge she’s introduced and researched for at least 20 years now. Along with my own due-diligence, I am thrilled she is so forthright and generous with her time, research, advice, etc.I’m a woman who can easily pass for 15-20-years younger, as I’ve been practicing anti-aging for decades now, before it was even called that! How I eat, what I eat, supplements I take daily, proper sleep, exercise, my thoughts, emotional health, and more.I can probably thank my dad for honoring good health, as he was a great role model. (He died at 92 of old age, no dementia, no diseases.) He was decades way before his time – taking daily supplements, eating plain yogurt every morning, oatmeal, exercise, etc. Even as a child, I would often think, “Hmm, he might be on to something, I am not going to grow old or ever get fat either.” And my dad looked great up until the end – plus he died with a full head of beautiful, white hair. While you can easily jump around in Suzanne’s book (based on what interests you), I am reading page-by-page, as I don’t want to miss anything. Oftentimes I’ll stop reading and do a quick search on something she or her doctors recommend, so I can see her new book is going to take a while for me to finish. That’s okay, I know in the end it will be well worth it. As always with her books, I LEARN something new each and every time. Things that will continue my path into aging the right way, while fooling everyone in my sight, LOL.TRUE STORY: I had emergency surgery (4.5 hours) after a traumatic accident just over 5-years ago. I don’t know what the term is, but hospitals refer to someone who look much younger than their chronological age a special code name. Well, I was one of them. I was wondering why medical personnel kept walking by my door and sheepishly taking a quick look, LOL. A nurse finally told me they were blown away by my age – and skin. One nurse was looking at my legs and commenting they were that of someone in their 30’s. I am younger than Suzanne, but not by that much. I have a very healthy head of hair, too – it grows like a weed, medium thick, etc. No Botox or fillers (except the “11” lines between my eyebrows) and my facial skin – and chest – almost smooth as butter. The latter I’ll give to solid genes (my mom in this case, her skin was nearly flawless until the end), but also my lifestyle and how I take care of myself counts as much, too.And while I’m only into the first 80 pages of Suzanne’s book, it struck me when she said people practicing anti-aging rarely get sick. She is 100% correct. It’s almost freaky to me that I only get sick once every 7 to 10 years, and I am not kidding. No flues, no colds, no chest coughs, no sore throats, nothing. In fact, on January 15th, 2020, I headed into my 7th year of being sick-free. I am super competitive with myself and expect to keep on a roll until at least 2023!Now, when the universe says, “It’s time, we’re giving you a doozy” – it does, LOL. You know, every “sickness” I named above, I get altogether and will last maybe 3-weeks. BUT, I’ll take that every 7-10 years, as opposed to those I know getting sick almost 3-4 times and more a year. I have a friend who has a horrible cold almost every 6 weeks (nasty cough, sore throat, and you name it.) That is unfathomable to me. I can go on and on, but I’ve said enough.Read her book, and practice what she and I have been doing for a very long time – and you, too, will be sick-free, will look great, feel great – and maybe you’ll get that special hospital code for, “Alert, much older patient than what they look like.” – LOL. It’s a great compliment for living life as if your body and mind depend on it, because it does!Thank you, Suzanne, you are a true inspiration to everyone who takes a healthy breath each morning (and especially to those who don’t, but will learn spades reading your book.)I wish I can meet you one day!
I’ve read all of Suzanne’s books, and this is the best so far. Covers everything you need to know, and gives you many affordable options for optimal health. Her interviews with cutting edge, forward thinking doctors are so informative, sometimes entertaining, and always valuable. If you read nothing else this year, read THIS.
There was a great deal of information about what to do to attain super human health and live robustly into the hundreds. Yet turns out she appeared on the Dr. Oz Show to promote the book while suffering from a fractured hip! I guess sometimes supplements just aren’t the answer.
I highly recommend this book on aging a new way. Excellent information to help us age beautiful and gracefully.
This book is a must read. Suzanne Somers allows the reader to have access to world class doctors and makes it easy for the reader to comprehend! Things she wrote about 20 years ago, traditional medicine is now acknowledging to be true
This book is fantastic! It is not a fast read because you go back and refer to information again and again. This is a book to have in your collection. I would love an autographed copy, but pre-order on Amazon because I can’t wait to read it. I sit with my pen and pad to write down the things that will help me. Suzanne is the messenger! Giving her readers access to top Drs’. knowledge is the message! Thank you Suzanne!

Her older sister is too busy practicing for a play at school, and mom and dad are working over the weekend. When will Azaleah get her extra credit done?Azaleah’s story begins at school on a Friday, and ends Monday morning when she arrives at school. Azaleah is written as having some spunk, all while trying to be responsible and successful all while trying to be herself. The storyline moves quickly, so I can see a young reader staying interested throughout the book. Mari Lobo’s illustrations are colorful and bright. The expressions on the characters’ faces are wonderfully accurate for each part of the story.Nikki Shannon Smith included a glossary of “new” words for the reader, instructions to make a diorama, and questions to answer verbally or writt

Excellent. For those who love reading historical fiction especially from the WWII era, I highly recommend this book. Fukuda approaches this genre very differently. This story begins with two young children. One in Bainbridge Island, Washington and the other in Paris, France. As a school assignment, these two become pen pals. Alex Maki is disheartened to learn that his pen pal, Charlie Levy, is actually a girl. But for some reason, he decides to stick to his correspondence years later, even after his school assignment no longer requires that they write.Alex is a bit of a loner and doesn’t have any friends. Charlie, in essence, becomes his only friend. What makes this story unique is that Alex is a Japanese American. Charlie is a French Jew. They become friends right before the war. So this correspondence makes this story even more special since we know what happens when the war begins.Alex and Charlie continue to write after the Japanese are sent to internment camps. A friend of the family delivers the letters to Charlie in Paris. Charlie’s family remains in Paris longer than they should have. When Alex’s letters are returned, he still continues to write, even though there are no more letters from Charlie. This story is about a friendship between two people that have never met but are bound to each other through these letters. It is like the quote from Jane Eyre: “I have a strange feeling with regard to you. As if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly knotted to a similar string in you. And if you were to leave I’m afraid the cord of communion would snap.”There is a light between them that binds them, and Alex will do what he can to find Charlie.I can’t tell you how much my heart hurt for these two. The story is told through Alex’s eyes. We see the despair around him while they are in the Japanese internment camps. We watch as members of the 442nd are killed around him as they storm Suicide Hill to save the Lost Battalion. And then we see glimpses of Auschwitz and Dachau when the American troops arrive.Alex never gave up looking for her.I cried at the end. I really cried. This was just wonderfully done. I really liked that he chose to link this string under the ribs of a Japanese American boy and a French Jewish girl, a symbol of two groups that were victimized by the war. That is what made this story even more special.
War is full of horrors. This is what Alex and Charley find out during World War II. They become pen pals as children, and continue to write as war breaks out. The worst part of their situations: Alex is a second-generation Japanese American, and Charley is a Jew in France. The Japanese, if you were remember your history, were rounded up and put into camps… and the Jews of Europe were rounded up and put into a more lethal kind of camp. This book is an important book historically. It’s important to never forget what people can do to each other. Whether European, American, or some other nationality… we don’t always treat one another with kindness. As far as the story is concerned, I like the characters. Charley is so full of enthusiasm and life, and Alex is your typical teenage boy. They grow up in this book, especially over the final years of the war. The characters drew me into the book at the beginning. There were some parts of this book that were slightly exaggerated for effect (I looked up some of the details) but this book kept me wanting to read more. I wanted to find out what happened to these characters. We follow Alex’s journey from Bainbridge Island, to a Japanese internment camp, to the war in Europe itself. The following paragraph contains a slightly small spoiler. This book does not have a happy ending. However, war is often like that. I prefer books where the characters end up better off in the end, but that didn’t happen. Especially in World War II.I definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for a book set in World War II with Japanese and Jewish characters. I really liked it and hope you do too.
“Maybe loving a city, a country, is like loving a person: you love her despite her faults, you forgive her constantly, you always believe in her, fight for her, you never give up on her.”This was a beautiful and heart-wrenching story about a Japanese American named Alex from Washington State and a Jewish girl named Charlie from Paris, France who develop a friendship during a school pen pal assignment that lasts and helps to carry them through their childhood and the tragedies of WWII.Alex and Charlie are easy to love from the beginning and your heart breaks for all of their hardships brought about by fear and prejudice. The author covers a wide range of the terrible events that occurred during this time frame from the Japanese internment camps to the Nazi concentration camps and everything in-between. Fukuda does a good job of portraying the racism and discrimination Japanese Americans experienced after Pearl Harbor. His detailed descriptions and way with words bring you right into the past, making it that more powerful and painful.I loved reading that it was inspired by finding out that Anne Frank had an American pen pal and that a concentration camp was liberated by a segregated all-Japanese military unit; that the author wanted to combine the two. A huge thanks to Macmillan-Tor/Forge for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I am now interested in checking out some of Fukuda’s other works and have already added some of his additional titles to my TBR list.
