Book Description

Review Praise for The Wild Lands:“This rugged survival story places a group of teens in a dark, burned-out post-apocalyptic nightmare. Your heart will pound for them as they face terrible dangers and impossible odds. Gripping, vivid, and haunting!”―Emmy Laybourne, international bestselling author of the Monument 14 trilogy“A compelling story that wouldn’t let me stop reading. Greci has created both a frightening landscape and characters you believe in and want to survive it.”―Eric Walters, author of the bestselling Rule of Three series“Heart-racing… A rugged wilderness lover’s post-disaster survivalist tale.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Heart-thumping suspense for readers who liked Rick Yancey’s The 5th Wave.” ―Booklist“Raw and accessible. Offering hints of Hatchet with markedly more manmade danger.” ―The Bulletin “This fast-paced book contains all the hallmarks of a classic wilderness survival novel (deadly terrain, vicious predators, literal cliff-hangers) and the best of the postapocalyptic genre … The author’s decades of Alaskan wilderness experience is evident throughout … A great high-stakes wilderness survival tale.” ―School Library Journal“A brutal vision of things to come. Greci delivers an apocalyptic odyssey that’s honest, relentless, and backed by his firsthand knowledge of the wilderness.”― Lex Thomas, author of the Quarantine series “The themes of teamwork, choice and free will are incredibly well done … an intense and thrilling ride.” ―TeenReads.com Read more About the Author Paul Greci has lived and worked in Alaska for over twenty-five years as a field biology technician in remote wilderness areas, a teacher and backpacking trip leader for teens, and a naturalist for several outdoor education programs. Customers Review:

A page-turning adventure, Hostile Territory is both gripping and reflective, as four young Alaskans beset by sudden disaster try to cope with everything the Alaska wilderness can throw at them and more. As in Paul Greci’s last novel, Wild Lands, tension and adventure enough to make it nearly impossible to put down, for readers of any age, is coupled with deeply engaging young characters who grow in response to the all-but-overwhelming challenges they face.
Four high school sophomores are away at a leadership camp in their home state of Alaska when a terrible earthquake hits. When they realize, after a few days, that help is not on its way, they decide to hike to the nearest town, through wilderness, which is hundreds of miles away. They find out on their journey that it’s not only the aftereffects of the earthquake they need to deal with.I read this author’s book THE WILD LANDS, enjoyed it, and thought this was a sequel. It’s not. THE WILD LANDS, while being a YA book, felt that it could be enjoyed by any age group. This book is also a YA book but feels targeted to maybe middle school readers.I enjoyed the first part of the book which focused on survival in a harsh environment but the second part (and I won’t go into spoiler details) felt contrived and unbelievable. While THE WILD LANDS takes place towards the end of this century, this book could conceivably happen now.The characters, especially the girls, were shallow and one-dimensional.It’s too bad. I was looking forward to reading this book.I received this book from Imprint Reads through Edelweiss in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
I could not put down this latest YA novel from Paul Greci. His ability to leave the reader (of any age) in suspense at the end of each and every chapter is amazing. One of the things I like best about this book is the realism: the kids are like any kids we would meet today and they continue to be that way as their situation becomes ever more difficult and unusual. The other thing I like best is Greci’s ability to bring the landscape of Interior Alaska to life. I could easily put myself in the setting where the story takes place, thanks to his adept handling of the Alaskan wilderness setting. The pace moves quickly, and the kids’ relationships develop meaningfully, while all the while they encounter difficult questions about what to do next and what their actions mean. I’ve read it twice now and look forward to reading it again!
