Customers Review:

There are actually three books between these covers. The first and most obvious is a coffee table worthy collection of images that testify to the skills of the photographer and printer; one is eager to visit the physical reality. The second is a how-to manual. Few will have the underlying landscape, financial and temporal resources that created Hortulus Farm, but there are good practical and aesthetic tips that should scale. The authors’ personal tastes and experience percolates through the prose informing the reader which rules can be bent and which ignored at some peril. The third book might best be described as a delightfully told love story of two men and a hundred acres of Pennsylvania over four decades. This is the narrative that wraps the images and carries the reader through the gardens.
What a lovely book. What a lovely story. The Hortulus Farm is obviously (from the photos) a simply beautiful 100 acres. This is the tale of two people discovering it “in the rough” over 40 years ago — and then they applied all of their creative skills and gardening intelligence (and lots of funds) to transform it into one of America’s garden jewels. Beyond the story, there is a ton of practical gardening knowledge and advice shared with the readers of this inspiring book. I loved reading it.
I love gardening books and probably have 200+ and this is definitely one of the best! Most of the time I only read part of the book with my interest lying in the pictures, but not with this book.
Book just fine but extremely slow USPS shipping.
A remarkable story of what two people can do.
Jack Staub’s writing is exquisite and his “Do’s and Don’ts are spot on.
What a beautiful book, full of fabulous photos, history, information and story of a garden rejuvenated on a huge scale. With the bones of a garden already in situ, the garden was developed in a series of large garden rooms, and we the reader, are invited to take a verbal walking guided tour of the many rooms totalling 20, of this garden built over 40yrs. as the intro tells us that “the classical garden vernacular was used to make an American farm garden”.There are pages of do and don’t for each style, lots of ideas and stories of the journey along the way. Not only does this make a fabulous coffee table book but a good guide to creating a garden.
One can appreciate what 40 years and deep pockets can due to a garden. The book is a medium size, not the size of some of those of other high profile garden/home designers. I would also note the property has been featured in magazines previously, and covers as well, and some of the photos are either exactly the same or much the same. Along those same lines, the owners looked to sell the property earlier last year, and you can easily find ~50 high quality photos online of the property and structures from the listing. These are larger format than what is in the book, and again a number of the same photos in the book. I’d note that numerous chapters begin with an image from European gardens and not the Hortulus farm. Overall, the property looks to have great woodland gardens, nice hardscape, and a few ideas that are different than other designers….for instance the Victorian style flat sawn balusters surrounding the kitchen garden. All of the elements are complementary to the house. Combined with a number of rescued farm animals, fowl and house pets, it’s a property a lot of people can envision themselves at. The parterre’s aren’t overly perfect, the plantings used are often the tried and true garden standards, which should give you confidence that you can recreate at least some small parts of these ideas.
