The first and most obvious is a coffee table worthy collection of images that testify to the skills of the photographer and printer; one is eager to visit the physical reality. The second is a how-to manual. Few will have the underlying landscape, financial and temporal resources that created Hortulus Farm, but there are good practical and aesthetic tips that should scale. The authors’ personal tastes and experience percolates through the prose informing the reader which rules can be bent and which ignored at some peril. The third book might best be described as a delightfully told love story of two men and a hundred acres of Pennsylvania over four decades. This is the narrative that wraps the images and carries the reader through the gardens. |
