Book Description

Book Description John Kane definitively captures the spirit of what it felt like for musicians on stage during the metamorphosis of sound reproduction in the sixties. Through the eyes and ears of Bill Hanley, whom so many of us thought of as a magician, John weaves a tale that is essential historically, microscopically pure in substance, and grand in scale. I was there. John captures these astounding moments in sound beautifully and with the passion that the subject deserves. If your interest, like so many, has been piqued by the music of the sixties, you will love this book. Thanks, John, for making us remember and for bringing this story to the audience it finally deserves. (Steve Katz, guitarist, singer, record producer, and original member of the Blues Project and American Flyer)From Washington, DC, to Woodstock, Bill Hanley was the best sound in the solar system. Uber awesome and amazing. (Wavy Gravy, Hippie Icon, Flower Geezer, and Temple of Accumulated Error)Music lovers will find this book essential reading, with stories of Mr. Hanley striving to provide first-rate sound at concert venues like Woodstock, the Newport Festivals, and the Beatles’ final tour, to mention a few. Bill Hanley is a real pioneer! Bill and brother Terry worked with my band, the Remains, in the mid-sixties, and I can say firsthand that they far exceeded any sound company we ever worked with. Until reading this book I didn’t realize the importance of what they were doing. (Barry Tashian, vocalist and guitarist with Emmylou Harris, the Remains, Barry & Holly Tashian, Gram Parsons, and Iris DeMent)This is the story of one man’s quest to provide good sound for an audience. It is the story of the creation of an industry, a journey with a rise and fall. It’s not overly technical, but it is deeply researched and well written. This story is about tenacity and invention and follows the rise of cultural events like tours by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, festivals like Woodstock, and venues like the Fillmore East and the CafĂ© au Go. Come along for the ride. . . . (Robert “Nite Bob” Czaykowski, previous touring sound engineer for New York Dolls, REM, KISS, and Aerosmith)The Last Seat in the House: The Story of Hanley Sound by John Kane is a must-read for anyone interested in live concert sound and its history. It is brutally honest and full of documented fascinating facts. (Stanley R. Miller, CEO of Sound Motions Inc., and previous sound engineer for Neil Diamond) Read more About the Author John Kane is faculty in the Design and Media Department at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. Customers Review:

A well written Biography of Bill Hanley’s sound reinforcement business. I can almost feel like I’m there with them, traveling the country and world setting up. all the innovations explained so that the most experienced engineer can appreciate, or the least tech savvy can gloss over and not loose sight of the big sound picture this book has to offer. This is a great read of a persons impact on the concert sound as we know it now. Clear clean crisp and loud with clarity. Thank you Bill for all your hard work, plus all your people that worked with you. This Book ” Sounds great”. Yes even at the Last seat in the House
It’s a great story. It is about pioneering sound engineering BUT has many levels of interest for those interested in American popular culture 1955-1985. Even better,, it’s the story of a creative genius. The oral history dimension provides first hand accounts that forever will only be available here!
A fantastic journey through the world of concert sound. Enjoyable read with story’s told by those who made the industry what it is today. As one who has built their own PA system, I remember the days when you could do a quick Amazon search to find pro audio gear. This book brings back all those fun memories. Thanks Bill and John for the memories. If you have ever been to a concert, you need to read this book!
I’m only half way through the book right now. But being a speaker builder for 44 years and owning a small sound company , I can really relate to Bill Hanley’s life history. The book is well written and shows how a regular guy can do something huge in life! John Kane hit the nail on the head with this book! A great read !!
Just finished reading The Last Seat in the House and have to say that I am blown away by this story! Not being an audio engineer myself, or any sort of “techy” person I wasn’t sure if this would be of interest to me but this book has proven to be a page turner. Author John Kane really captures what it was like to be there at each stage of Hanley’s amazing career. This book was engaging and kept me wanting more! I would highly recommend this book to not only audiophiles but anyone with an interest in popular music, history, innovations, or those just looking for a good read!
After thumbing through John Kane’s impressive opus, it is clear that he painstakingly researched the multifaceted topics in his book. This book is a balance of technical to serve the audiophile/engineer, and general interest for the popular music fan of this era. Hanley Sound was, if not is, the most important influence on the developing music business (50s-70s) and Kane captured that history with the finesse of such authors/historians like David McCullough and others. This book is an adventure in sound and music. Stories that are Interwoven with the early festival marketplace, you learn first hand about the behind the scenes backbreaking efforts of rocks earliest roadies and engineers.I am an audio engineer (and a music fan) and I highly recommend this book. For the interviews alone it is worth its price in gold. The Last Seat in the House is a must read for anyone on stage or in the audience.
Although I needed this book for research and reference purposes, I was afraid it might be somewhat dry reading. I could not have been more wrong. Not only is it jam-packed with facts, but those facts are presented through incredibly readable stories, anecdotes and interviews. Every time I have reached for a reference, I’ve kept reading. This book is a great example of how this kind of history should be told. Well done.
