A wonderful read for lovers of historical fiction! … The characters, the sense of camaraderie and adventure, and the unity of the women. Take this perilous trip to the California goldfields with this group of 44 women.” ―the novel gnome“Female bonding in the nineteenth century had dangers unique to the era. Maggie’s ‘unsuitable’ friendships, forged over shared hardships and the impossibility of returning home, make this exciting novel difficult to put down.” ―Jeanne Greene, Booklist Read more About the Author Award-winning author Sandra Dallas was dubbed “a quintessential American voice” by Jane Smiley in Vogue. The book was a decent read, but the author went a bit overboard with the number of supposed “ bad guys” who were after different ladies . A decent read, but not one of the author’s best. Sandra Dallas is one of my favorite authors and her latest novel is just as wonderful as her other books. I’ve always been fascinated with the Oregon Trail and California history, particularly around the gold rush of 1849. Her historical details seem well-researched. The characters are interesting, believable, and their stories ring true. I enjoyed the character development, especially regarding both pastors. My only disappointment was when the book ended. Well done, Ms. Dallas! I enjoyed nearly all of this book. I felt the author was overzealous on the badness of the bad guys, had to roll my eyes a few times. But the good gals and guys were well developed and realistic. Also took a while to get used to proper diction of most of the characters. Enjoyable story. Sandra Dallas has written a wonderful story of strong women full of courage and determination..an excellent read..highly this westering women I have read all but one of Sandra Dallas’ novels. I found her work about 25 years ago and have enjoyed every book I have read. Western Women did not disappoint. This is another good story that kept me interested and easily drawn in. Although this story is sad and heartbreaking at times, I loved the charters and and joyed their adventure.Dallas’ style is easy to read and interesting, but not incredibly profound or too serious. It’s an engaging read and if you are a fan of Dallas, I’m sure you will like this one too. If you are new to her this is as good as any place to start. I’ve read ALL of Sandra Dallas’ books and this has to be one of my favorites. You will fall in love with the characters as you read about their incredible journey west. You’ll urge them on, laugh and cry as they bond together for an unforgettable journey. I’m a huge Sandra Dallas fan and have read all her books. That said, I noticed a shift in her previous book that was more pronounced in this last book. The dialogue was stilted, choppy, almost juvenile and over-the-top preachy! I won’t be in a rush to buy her next book and that makes me so sad! This is one of the best novels I have ever read! Maggie and her traveling associates have bonded thru domestic violence, loss of loved ones and developed deep friendships. I recommend this book to anyone of any walk of life. After the dangers they faced you even find out what happened to them. Jo |
