Customers Review:

I applaud Simon Wells for writing this biography of Anita Pallenberg. She was a fascinating but disturbing woman, especially during her 1960s – 1970s heyday. Wells has gathered up many facts, anecdotes, and stories — both true and untrue — about Pallenberg and presented them in a chronological, carefully thought out book, along with his own perceptions and analyses.I appreciate Wells puncturing many of the “Anita the madwoman/witch/Satanist” tales that have floated about for decades, but I can’t share his almost reverential view of her. Yes, Pallenberg was beautiful, in a rather hard, androgynous way, and she was highly intelligent. Many people who knew her seem to have been swept away by her charm, vivaciousness, sultry sensuality, and well-defined sense of humor, so I well believe that she had an incredible, even unforgettable, charisma about her.And yet … Pallenberg was disturbing. It wasn’t her drug addictions that disturbed as much as her drive to dominate, manipulate, twist, abuse, and mind-game nearly everyone — especially those she loved most. Her sado-masochistic romantic relationships and wretched parenting were frankly appalling. I pitied the woman yet couldn’t quite excuse her never-ending dramas and cruel actions. Clearly it would have been exhausting to be around her for long. Richards must have been a very patient man.And then … I can listen to the Stones’ music and feel Pallenberg’s indelible presence and influence — the grim beauty, the sensuous exoticism, the barely contained chaos, the unleashed energy … and I’m thankful to her. She was a naughty adventuress, but the world needs a few naughty adventuresses to keep things lively.Altogether, I’m thankful to Wells for writing this excellent book about a difficult yet intriguing woman.
Simon Wells did a fine job chronicling the life of Anita Pallenberg. Reading this book, you understood the human being, beyond the legend and muse of the Stones. Not much has been written about what her life was like after 1979 until now. This book was well worth the wait.
Amazingly insightful, this comprehensive work tells the true story of Anita’s gloriously messy and courageous journey through five decades. Tragic and inspiring in equal measure, this is a must read – especially for those who admire strong women and raw honesty.
An adequate biography… does not do the lady justice in person but the fact remains without Anita there would be no sympathy for the devil… no gimme shelter essentially no mega hits for the stones. Like her or not she was the heart and soul of the Rolling Stones and a special force of nature. Music and fashion is forever indebted to her influence and to all her haters… I’m sorry you don’t have the awareness to understand her power. Honoring your spirit Anita and thank you for your powerful contribution to the arts.
Does Anita Pallenberg deserve a book? Maybe…though she did seem like an irredeemable nuisance. The book is written in such a peculiar way, however, that it is difficult to read. Almost as if the entire thing was translated by Instagram translator. ‘More cosmology would occur?’ ‘Given other members of the party sensed the more than fraternal energies leaping off the pair’?! ‘Whereas previously the accoutrements to living on the crest of a wave were external and largely superficial…’ ugh it’s just torture.
A great book about one of the most overlooked muses in rock history.
