Book Description

Review “Brain Wash provides the tools for each of us to live a happier, more contented life. Drs. David and Austin Perlmutter engage our most current understanding of neuroscience to reveal how the brain can be functionally reconfigured to distance ourselves from pervasive negativity and welcome empathy and compassion back into our lives. The choices we make each day in terms of what we eat, how well we sleep, and even how we interact with our digital world all contribute to our worldview. And central to the Brain Wash mission is maximizing these and other choices towards seeing and creating a better world.”―Dr. Rudolph Tanzi, Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School, and author of The Healing Self“We all know what it’s like to feel distracted and overwhelmed. Brain Wash is an invaluable guide that’s crammed with solutions for helping us to restore our focus, energize our bodies, and refresh our minds.”―Gretchen Rubin, author of The Four Tendencies and The Happiness Project“Brain Wash shows us how our ability to make the best decisions is literally being hijacked every day. But more importantly, Drs. David and Austin Perlmutter empower the reader with the tools to regain control over our decision-making and implement strategies to allow health, empathy and happiness to manifest. Brain Wash brings a healthy dose of compassion to the world.”―Dr. Josh Axe, bestselling author of Keto Diet“Inflammation, enhanced by so many influences of our modern world, dramatically reduces our ability to make good decisions and feel content. Brain Wash not only explores how this is happening, on a global scale, but also shows what we can do right now to take back control. From spending time in nature to choosing to consume one plant-based meal a day, Brain Wash provides the tools the reclaim and rebuild your brain’s ability to make better choices and allow health and happiness to flourish.”―Mark Hyman, MD, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Food and director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine“What if there was nothing wrong with you, and so much wrong with the ways in which our dominant culture hijacks your decision-making? You’d want to know how to reclaim your mind, your biology, and your sense of balance. Brain Wash feels, at once, like a sympathetic recognition of our modern day struggle with tech and a science-paved path back home to ourselves. This is one of the most important topics of our time, and Drs. David and Austin Perlmutter have compassionately, intelligently, and creatively opened a vital dialogue.”―Kelly Brogan, MD, author of Own Your Self“This book was a total surprise. A father and son representing entirely different generations arrive at the same conclusion: that wellness fosters connection and this creates a meaningful life. Beautifully scripted and a bit like an adventure story, I kept wanting to get to the ‘final message’ of how being well makes us more loving and lovable. This is the endpoint where well-being takes us, and this is especially critical in our disconnected digital age with its constant distractions. Do yourself a favor and get this book”―John Ratey, MD, Harvard Medical School, author of Spark“In a world where most of us are feeling rushed, tired, and burned out, Brain Wash reveals how even small changes in your lifestyle choices can dramatically improve your day, your mood, and even your life.”―Melissa Hartwig Urban, Whole30 Co-Founder and CEO“Brain Wash presents a road map for the relationship between how we think, feel, and behave and our lifestyle and environment. It is an artful and compelling manifesto on how to improve our mood, mind, and memory.”―Jeffrey Bland, PhD, founder of the Institute for Functional Medicine and president and founder of Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute“The message of Brain Wash couldn’t be more urgent or timely. If everyone followed its advice, the world would be a happier and healthier place.”―Catherine Price, author of How to Break Up with Your Phone and founder of Screen/Life Balance (screenlifebalance.com)“Brain Wash is an important book that tackles a colossal modern challenge: the quest to reclaim our health and happiness from a world that encourages us to overspend, overindulge, and underthink. David and Austin Perlmutter are consummate guides who share a multitude of approachable, concrete, and down-to-earth solutions. Highly recommended.”―Adam Alter, author of Irresistible and Drunk Tank Pink Read more About the Author David Perlmutter, MD, is a board-certified neurologist and Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. Incredible book! This book should become a textbook in middle and high schools. This book should be read by parents and teachers! It should be part of the technology curriculum in our schools and colleges.Life changing information!Thank you doctors!
It’s pretty darn impossible to say anything bad about Dr Perlmutter. He’s got so much good advice to offer and clearly is on top of the preventive medicine game. What left me a bit underwhelmed in this book was I that found it to be pretty much a rehash of all that’s been published and YouTubed and written about the long term necessity of eating whole foods, tossing out the junk and additives, systemic inflammation, (how many times have you been told tumeric is good for you by now, do you need to hear that again?) and living in a psychology healthy way: connected to nature, other people, and your “best self”.Doc P. here runs the message through the brain health wash, which is fine, but there’s nothing very novel coming across if you’ve delved into this whole shebang before through *his* prior books and the other luminaries in this field. If you’ve not read or followed any of Doc P.’s prior work or others like him than sure, this book will definitely be very valuable. Leave it at that.
It is difficult to believe Grain Brain could be improved upon BUT this book adds to the knowledge base Grain Brain begins. I have read 70 pages of Brain Wash on the first sitting and could not put it down. It is clear functional medicine at it’s best in addition to being life changing. At 63 years old I am able to work as a Pharmacist with a clear mind, healthy body and restful sleep.
I have been a fan of his since 2013. I have read all his books. BrainWash is just as wonderful as the others. His message really resonates with this modern day era. I have three small children and if there is one thing I got out of this book, it’s to take them outside more!! Thank you David and Austin! I look forward to continuing my low carb, brain fueled journey!
This book should be a required read for anyone with a phone, computer, TV! It should be a required read in health class and on the desk at work. I knew that technology has created a disconnect in our society, increased depression and decreased empathy, I just didn’t know the alarming science behind it. I have seen the change in my patients in my practice, my children, and friends. If you are a parent or if you love anyone, give them this book. It’s alarming to think that our kids brains are still developing are in the biggest experiment of the century. I bought this book to improve my happiness and was wondering why I have felt more anxious, decreased happiness and decreased satisfaction in life the past 5 years. It’s time to wake up World, we are heading for the biggest social catastrophe and we are asleep at the wheel. This book will change your life and hopefully help you make important changes in the lives of the people you know and love. I would even give it to the people you don’t like, it will help them find their happiness and what they are missing in their lives.
As we all continue to dive into podcasts, a Netflix series, using apps to entertain ourselves, using apps to organize ourselves – we think we’re doing well and being productive. That may be but you’re being Brain Wash-ed at the same time.Dr. Perlmutter reminds me that I need to step away from these things and reconnect to nature, my kids, myself, my friends and activities that do not involve a damn screen. It’s so so easy to fall back into this trap.I was doing amazingly well for YEARS without Netflix or games on my phone. For some reason, I find myself watching more Netflix and looking for ‘strategy’ games thinking I’m being good as long as I am being strategic.Nonsense.I’m going through his recommendations now to purge and change my ways. I’ll be sure to pass this on to my three boys and we’ll do it together.Overall, we have a lot of great things going on in our home. We are active. We do not have phones at the table when we eat and we don’t use WiFi. However, there are many things that need improving and thanks to Brain Wash, I have a tool to help me – and my family – break the chains.Thank you, David and Austin! If you find yourself behind any type of screen, you need this book. Yes, I know you are aware that it’s bad to be behind a screen and you think you can change it without any tools. I lied to myself, too. Get Brain Wash. You need help – we all do.
I like it all. This is a master work. The concept of disconnection syndrome is very apt and helpful in understand the a main predicament of the status quo. But equally important are the recommendations for how to reconnect. They are clear, practical, affordable and compelling. Let’s all get to work and reconnect !
In a book less than 300 pages, 100 pages are recipes, notes, and index. Total filler. The rest is heavily noted and quoted research, which is summed up on page 190 with 8 basic bullet points, things like 1) Exercise 2) Get plenty of sleep 3) eat a healthy diet low on refined carbs. Really? And presented as if it’s ground-breaking…
