Book Description

Review “Feminist champions Jessica Valenti and Jaclyn Friedman are back with their second anthology, rallying a handful of contributors like Samantha Irby, Dahlia Lithwick, Ayanna Pressley, Moira Donegan, and Julia Serano to share their personal stories on sexual assault, consent, gender norms, and overall life after the #MeToo movement.”―Marie Claire, Best Books of Winter“This urgent volume shines a light on the moral imperative to trust and believe women in order to save lives.”―Ms.“In this urgent essay collection, feminist activists Valenti and Friedman bring together a diverse range of contributors to make the case for ‘a simple but radical trust in women’ … Consistently well-written and soundly reasoned, these essays persuasively cast the tendency to doubt women as one of America’s greatest social ills … an illuminating call to action.”―Publishers Weekly“Inclusive and essential… a must-have for the modern reader.”―Library Journal, starred review“Believe Me is a book that lives up to its title. Customers Review:

I have so many words to describe the profound impact of this book: brilliant, insightful, thought-provoking, and inspiring. As Friedman and Valenti did over a decade ago with Yes Means Yes, they have done again by pulling together another exceptional set of essays about ending sexual and gender violence and the path forward. In a moment when it’s easy to lose hope about the state of affairs, this book creates both greater understanding of the issues facing us and how we can unravel our culture of violence. I can see this book being widely adapted for college courses. Everyone needs to read this book.
Wow. Just WOW. This book is a powerful, beautifully crafted anthology detailing how important it is to ALL people that social change happens when we listen to women’s truth. We live in a time where women are STILL not believed, heard and/or taken seriously. The effects of ignoring women’s stories and lived experience deleteriously affect everything around us. This book is a clarion call for every human to look around them and see how their life, community, government and world are affected when women’s stories are not just ignored, but discounted even when they’re heard.
Honestly, as a long-time feminist, activist, and avid reader. I didn’t expect to have any kind of unique experience with this one. But it was up my alley and accessible, so I figured I’d give it a shot.I was wrong. This is the antidote I needed to these horrible backsliding years. Rather than simply describing and analyzing all the ways that this country is failing women and girls, people of color, trans folks, etc, this text actually ENVISIONS a different way of being. It breathed life into my tired spirit.I’m so grateful to have read it. And grateful to the contributors for sharing their visions.
Jaclyn Friedman and Jessica Valenti’s earlier anthology, Yes Means Yes, was one of those books that I encountered at the right moment for it to be absolutely formative to my feminist awakening. A decade later, Believe Me made me think about similar topics in new and exciting ways, and I’m brought back to my college-age self, holed up in her dorm room reading those earlier essays. I especially recommend the essays from Moira Donegan and Sady Doyle, but they’re all fantastic, and we’re all lucky to have this anthology in 2020.
An essential read for anyone thinking about feminism and social change – or anyone you know should be thinking about it.The contributors seem thoughtfully chosen to offer a wide range of experiences and perspectives. They provide a thought-provoking array of ideas about why and how women have been denied justice around sexual assault, and why and how that can – and must – change. It’s a book I’d gift both to a well-read, radical feminist friend or someone who needs an introduction to these issues. It’s that simple, complex, and good.
This is a very important book. Hopefully men will read this as well as women and it will be transformative.Listening to these women can’t help but move one.
I am really looking forward to reading this!
