Read more Customers Review:The startling clarity and precision of Qu’s interpretation of Hume’s epistemology is well written and organized. Over and above a bold interpretation, Qu contributes nuanced distinctions to the conversation among Humean scholars from Ainslie to Wright, and many in between, showing where he agrees and where he differs. In the end, the book makes a sustained case that the epistemology of the Enquiry differs from that of the Treatise, and offers a novel reading of the Enquiry’s treatment of scepticism. The treatment of scepticism goes beyond an interpretation of Hume’s position to soften the standard radical position. It suggests a neat fit into the 18th-century war between religion and science over the basis of human knowledge. It almost makes too much sense. |
