Book Description

About the Author Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her 12 years as an editor at Benjamin Cummings, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is lead author of Campbell Biology   and co-author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with PhysiologyMartha R. Taylor has been teaching biology for over 35 years. She earned her B.A. in biology from Gettysburg College and her M.S. and Ph.D. in science education from Cornell University. She was assistant director of the Office of Instructional Support at Cornell for seven years. She has taught introductory biology for both majors and non-majors at Cornell University and is currently a lecturer in the Learning Strategies Center teaching supplemental biology courses. Based on her experiences working with students in classrooms, laboratories, and tutorials, Dr. Taylor is committed to helping students create their own knowledge of and appreciation for biology. She has been the author of the Student Study Guide for all nine editions of Campbell BiologyEric J. Simon is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and non-science majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for non-science majors. Dr. Simon is the lead author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with PhysiologyJean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in an advanced biology course. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching non-science majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology   and co-author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology . Read more

I simply could NOT use the $%%$ eBook, alone. I bought the stupid eBook for class. The $%$$ eBook is NOT set up to easily see to read two pages at a time, especially when a pictorial flow chart spans two pages not just one. This is a loose leaf physical book. With a loose leaf text I can follow two or more pages at a time. I can accurately complete the eBook assignments now with ease. I can bring the one paper chapter at a time to class then return it into the notebook. The eBook also does NOT have a great way of looking up concepts which are two paired words like “independent variable.” There are wonderful oral resources and animations with the eBook. But, to see the concepts being explained two clear pages at a time is invaluable to my current almost 100 A in class. I cannot believe that this Pearson company has costed me MORE than $600 for a biology course!! This paper copy of the text book should be included in the price of the %%%$$ eBook.i should have a refund from Pearson for the necessity to have purchased this book!!!A loose leaf book is a great idea. To insert my own loose leaf notes without writing in the margins of the text or attempting to manipulate the $%$# eBook features to put in my own notes is good. I do not have to defile the loose leaf pages with scribbling. To those professors adopting a Biology text, I say emphatically, look at the eBook #$$% again!! One must be able to have an expensive computer to see two pages two at a time, a big computer screen, one which is NOT portable to class. The ability to split screen the text with the assignments is not really very good either. I still have to toggle the two screens. Even with toggling, I could not see an entire concept map at one time, which necessitated more money out for this loose leaf book too. God Pearson!! You are not thoughtful.Yes!!!, the e-study resources are wonderful. Animations, downloadable mp3 topics, … But, Pearson, you are just plain greedy!!$ You HAD to steal for more than $600 an eBook AND this loose leaf text from my poverty.I sleep on the floor. I have one chair and three changes of clothes only. This book should be included with the eBook.poverty stricken j
I got the kindle edition because I thought it would be best to sync across all my devices, macbook, iPad and iPhone, essential tools to all students. However the rental is pretty pricy and they only let you access the book from two devices, to me that is pretty greedy and a HUGE inconvenience to how I do my studying. I have never had this problem with another kindle textbook from school.
Beautiful book. I’m a chemical engineering undergrad with little interest in biology, but despite that, I found this textbook to be almost enjoyable. The pages are colorful, and graphics exhibit concepts clearly. The effort taken to make the book look “pretty” is impressive. The chapters are concise and to the point, and most of the sections are only a page long at most, typically with images filling a good portion of the space, so it’s a fairly easy read. The Chapter Reviews are helpful, and the paper quality (though an odd thing to note) is good. Definitely a perfect book for any non-biology majors, or anyone who honestly sort of dislikes biology; however, the drawback with that is that some of the sections are glossed over a bit too much, and some of the details are omitted, such as clearly-stated exact numbers as to how much ATP is produced at each stage of cellular respiration, which I found strange, though the numbers could always be found online once the concepts are understood. Overall though, a wonderful book, and I’d definitely use it again.
It’s a standard textbook. It delivers the necessary information.
Was a valued companion for the course. Thanks for letting me rent this
This book just came in the mail today. It is worn completely out. It has a lot of wear and tear. I am renting it for a class and I hope it survives the semester. Do not try to charge me a damaged fee!!
great biology book for beginners
So happy I could rent this book instead of buying it for $100+, which I am only going to use for this class. I am on a budget considering I work full time and go to school part time. Thanks Amazon!
