Book Description

Review “To understand and appreciate the bravery of the scientists working to protect our nation from such bio-epidemics, as well as how the U.S. military goes about protecting its troops from such threats, Inside the Hot Zone is a terrifying, but indispensable guide.”—Joshua Sinai, Washington Times (Joshua Sinai Washington Times 2019-11-26)”Inside the Hot Zone is very well written and covers sufficient background about the author’s journey, his medical credentials, and simplified explanations of medical diseases and associated protocols. . . . I highly recommend this to all members of the military regardless of rank or branch of service.”—Lt. Col. George Hodge, Military Review (Lt. Col. George Hodge Military Review 2020-01-10)“Writing in a style reminiscent of The Coming Plague, Kortepeter sheds new light on the horrors of bioweapons, on the inner workings of the federal bureaucracy, and on the insiders’ views of the anthrax attacks. His expertise and experiences make Inside the Hot Zone compelling reading for anyone interested in scientific, medical, or military thrillers. And, scariest of all, the thrills are real.”—Ted Cieslak, MD, Col. (Ret.) U.S. Army, medical co-director of the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and medical director of the Nebraska Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center   (Ted Cieslak 2019-02-23)“Absolutely riveting. Dr. Kortepeter tells a fascinating story. . . . If you want to know what it is to be part of this exceptional team of heroic Americans working in the ‘hot zone,’ you should read this book.”—Lester Martinez-Lopez, MD, MPH, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) U.S. Army, and former commander of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, Fort Detrick, Maryland   (Lester Martinez-Lope 2019-02-23)“Col. Kortepeter’s inside story from the front lines of our nation’s defense against the real and increasing threat of biological weapons is fascinating. He gives voice in lucid prose to the unsung heroes working tirelessly at the world’s best biodefense research center at Fort Detrick, Maryland. Their mission is to keep America safe, and our nation owes them an enormous debt of gratitude.”—Andy Weber, former assistant secretary of defense for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Defense Programs (Andy Weber 2019-02-23)“With extraordinary imagination, a deep knowledge of his subject, and riveting personal accounts of headline-making events in the search for protection against biologic weapons—both manmade and natural—Dr. Mark Kortepeter has written a gripping book. . . . The novice as well as the most experienced student of biological weapons will emerge from a reading of this book better informed, profoundly grateful for the courage and expertise of these ‘soldiers in the trenches,’ and surprisingly entertained.”—Eric B. Schoomaker, MD, PhD, Lt. Gen. U.S. Army (Ret.), 42nd Army Surgeon General and Commanding General, U.S. Army Medical Command   (Eric B. Schoomaker 2019-04-09)“While Richard Preston’s book The Hot Zone very effectively brought the importance of high containment virus work into the living rooms of America, it was heavily sensationalized and far from what actually occurs in a real BSL-4 laboratory. Dr. Kortepeter paints a much more accurate picture as seen from the inside by the staff who do the dangerous work on a daily basis.”—Thomas Geisbert, PhD, expert in Ebola and other high containment viruses at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston National Laboratory   (Thomas Geisbert 2019-02-23) Read more About the Author Mark G. Kortepeter is a professor in the Department of Epidemiology, College of Public Health, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and a retired army colonel with more than twenty-five years of service. He is an expert in germ warfare defense and has held multiple leadership roles at the nation’s largest containment laboratory dedicated to biological warfare defense, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID).  Read more

Customers Review:

What is biological warfare? How does it differ from chemical warfare? Which germs are most likely to be used in an attack? What is the backstory to the post-911 anthrax attacks?….or Ebola outbreaks? What happened during a suspected attack on a sitting US President? How do you protect individuals who handle deadly pathogens on a daily basis?…or soldiers in a combat zone?….or entire populations during a pandemic?Follow Dr. Mark Kortepeter (scientist, physician, soldier) through his illustrious career at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease, our nation’s main center for biological weapons defense, and you will get answers to these and many more questions. With his clear writing style, Dr. Kortepeter makes technical information easily understandable. Also, he acknowledges the emotions he dealt with in the midst of various infectious disease crises.Anyone who reads this will be better informed about the deadly germs around us and the heroes who help protect us from them.
A well written book from behind the scenes by a US Army Colonel Medical Officer who is one of the world authorities on bioterrorism. By the end of the book, you will have learned in detail about the many unsung heroes who are daily risking their lives to both fight world-wide biowarfare, and through research, seeking ways to cure and prevent the usually fatal effects of such agents. The author, an internationally recognized scientist, teacher and physician, uses the book to teach, explain, and often simply frighten his readers as he takes us into the real world of the perils and joys of such vital work.
This is an excellent book. The descriptive real-world accounts of the author’s vast experiences in multiple areas of biopreparedness will appeal to both healthcare workers and the general public. From working in the Level 4 lab to vaccinating soldiers in a combat zone to dealing with quarantine in the notorious USAMRIID ‘Slammer’, the book reads like a collection of stories from an insider point of view. The detailed description of bioterrorism events as well as biological weapon capabilities throughout the world is frightening, and yet intriguing to read about. Highly recommended!
As a biosecurity and public health emergency preparedness professional, I greatly appreciated Mark’s book- Inside the Hot Zone. This is written from a great viewpoint and answers and asks an appropriate amount of questions for all levels of readers. I can’t recommend this book enough for folks interested in the world of bioterrorism, biosecurity, the secret world of USAMRIID, and the like.
I liked reading an army insider’s account of the anthrax letter investigation and other trials that the army’s biodefence research facility faced.
This book has something for everyone – science, medicine, military issues, politics, and glimpses of touching family moments. It’s a great enough read that I am buying another copy as a gift to a colleague.
We learn very little about medical crises when they happen, especially when the government is involved. It takes someone who was there to tell us what really happened. The author of Inside The Hot Zone was a major player in several events that have resonance today, now that we are in the middle of a possible coronavirus pandemic. If you like medical mysteries, or if you are a history buff, this book does not disappoint.
I was amazed to learn about the important work these “Hot Zone Warriors” do protecting the nation from infectious disease threats. A compelling read that I couldn’t put down. A must read! Bravo to the author, and thank you for your service.
