Volume 3 starts off with Conan joining the Crimson Company a group of mercenaries. They are employed by Belzamo the King of Ronnoco to first find a magical ring and then kidnap a princess to try to change the local alliances. The king’s plans go awry, and Conan was never one for company anyway, so his membership in the Company doesn’t last long.The real important issue is #58 where Conan meets Belit and the Black Corsairs a bunch of pirates. The two become lovers and would be a dynamic duo for the rest of this collection.Together they travel up and down the coast robbing boats, running into mystical islands, serpents, and any number of magicians and warriors. Along the way they meet the Red Sonja and even King Kull who died millennia ago.Belit also makes a return to her home kingdom of Shemite only to find it full of Stygians who are her blood enemy. That sets her upon a quest into the Stygians world of Luxor to find her father.This is Conan at its peak. Most of the issues were created by the dynamic duo of writer Roy Thomas and John Buscema. |
