Book Description

Review “Artificial intelligence is being heralded as the next big thing, but a cluster of scientists, technologists and investors are aiming higher. In the vernacular of Silicon Valley, where many of them are based, their goal is nothing less than disrupting death, and their story is at the center of “Immortality, Inc.” by science journalist Chip Walter…While “Immortality, Inc.” is focused on aging and the efforts to defy it, the book is also a gripping chronicle of private-sector experimentation and ingenuity in the face of inertia in Washington…An end to aging? Ponce de León would have been impressed.”—Wall Street Journal”His fascinating account will interest those who want to know more about Silicon Valley’s rainmakers, as well as where science now stands on preventing and curing disease.” –Publishers Weekly “Chip Walter has written an extraordinary book. What a cast. What a story. What a book.” –William Shatner   “Can we live forever? Maybe, maybe not. But either way, you’ll love the book. More than anything, Walter is a first rate story teller. He walks a fine line, delivering excellent science while mesmerizing you with the nitty gritty details behind the histories and personal stories of the book’s main characters. And at bottom are big and universal questions. You’ll never see the question of our mortality in quite the same way after reading this book. And you’ll never be bored.” – Judy Cameron, Professor and Director of the Healthy Brain Aging Workgroup, University of Pittsburgh“The quest to conquer aging is one of the most extraordinary developments in science today. We may not live to see the end of it, but we can watch the beginning. Immortality, Inc. is a colorful, entertaining, and up-to-date tour of the frontier.” –Jonathan Weiner, [Pulitzer Prize–winning] author of The Beak of the Finch and Long for This World   “If you think everybody talks about immortality but few do anything about it, Chip Walter’s bold examination of those who do is worth the read.”—Herbert Boyer, co-founder of Genentech, Inc., and professor emeritus, University of California–San Francisco   When future generations find themselves living in a world where life spans reach hundreds of years, readers can look back at Walter’s book to see how it all started. This book will age well.” —Anthony Lake, former National Security Advisor and Executive Director of UNICEF   “Chip Walter has written a wickedly compelling account of an endeavor that seems ridiculously far-fetched—until you read it. Then it seems enticingly real. The book reads like a thriller, and has some of the clearest explanations of tough science I’ve ever read. I actually now believe these folks can do something like they imagine. Crazy! Or is it…?” —Grant Oliphant, president of the Heinz Endowments and author of Ring of Years   “I don’t know whether I want to live forever, but in his captivating and informative book, Immortality, Inc., Chip Walter tells us how and when it might just happen. Walter’s crisp, clear, colorful prose and his compelling character portraits transform the illusive and unlikely idea of immortality into a vivid and exciting read.”—Lee Gutkind, editor, of Creative Nonfiction   “With a reporter’s energy and curiosity, Chip Walter has pursued . . . the scientists, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, and others who share a conviction, or a hope, that age is a curable disease.” —Jeffrey Frank, author of Ike and Dick: Portrait of a Strange Political Marriage   “Chip Walter has a unique talent for using humorous figures of speech and insightful factoids to turn the droll subject of death research into something curious and interesting [and] gives the reader a chance to be a ‘fly on the wall’ in the most important board rooms of Silicon Valley.” —Martine Rothblatt, creator of Sirius XM and CEO, United Therapeutics Corporation   Read more About the Author CHIP WALTER is a science journalist, filmmaker, and former CNN bureau chief whose books include Last Ape Standing and Thumbs, Toes, and Tears. His writing has appeared in The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, and National Geographic, to which he contributed the January 2015 cover story “The First Artists.” He has been interviewed on “All Things Considered” and Michio Kaku’s “Science Fantastic.” Read more

Customers Review:

This is the story of the most important scientific R&D project ever undertaken – the curing of aging and death. Very well written, it describes each of the principal scientists involved today in anti-aging and longevity research, e.g. Arthur Levinson, Cynthia Kenyon, Ray Kurzweil, Aubrey de Grey, Greg Venter, and the high tech visionaries who are funding them. These men and women, each an internationally renowned scientist in their own right, have put their talents and their reputations on the line to do the impossible. Who are they?, what motivates them?, and why they will probably succeed.
Walter takes us with him as he gains confidential access to the fascinating scientests (not always in agreement) who are working in the fields of genome mapping, stem cell research, and biomedical advancement. Walter’s ability to clearly and quickly explain the interrelated complexities of this almost science fiction like field is amazing. Just as interesting are the entrepreneurs who are betting billions on the results of this cutting edge research. Walter takes us into their very private world too. A must read true adventure story. I couldn’t believe that I was reading a science book on the beach but wow I couldn’t wait to turn the page to learn more about the extraordinary people involved with curing death. Looking at death as a disease that can be tackled. Why not. If at the beginning you thought it couldn’t be done, read to the end and ask yourself again. You’ll be surprised!
This is for the audio book: Graham Winton is a fantastic reader (I knew I recognized that great voice from Deep Medicine!)There are probably three of the biggest challenges of humanity: education, the environment, and aging. They are interlinked. If aging is addressed, people will care more for the environment since they’ll be living in it a lot longer. Education makes people more aware of environmental impact (countless studies confirm this). And reversing aging keeps more experience around, helping with education.Unfortunately, we have some of our brightest minds figuring out how to get someone to click on an ad or how to short new equity instruments. This book tells the story of people fighting the good fight.Entertaining and thrilling in its own way, it’s a fantastic read along with Sinclair’s Lifespan. Lifespan’s biggest problem is that it gets in depth on the epigenetics side (I loved it, but I work in the life sciences). This book is just right for most people. Read it and get ready for the future.
At a glance, the title Immortality, Inc. may seem like it belongs on a literary list of current best-selling fiction. In truth, it is the remarkable, real-life story from science journalist Chip Walter of “renegade science, silicon valley, and the quest to live forever.” The title says it all. While you may assume that the dream of extending live significantly, perhaps even indefinitely, is the stuff of science fiction, this book proves otherwise.Unbeknownst to me, there has been a very serious, multi-disciplinary, ongoing effort underway to tackle the mysteries of aging and death, initiated by some of the brightest minds on the planet, backed by deep-pocket investors. In short, what has always been considered impossible seems now to be on the verge of becoming reality when one factors in the advancements in genome research, stem cell research aided by our ever-increasing ability to crunch staggering amount of data with the help of the latest super-computers and algorithms. The book may make believers out of even the staunchest skeptics. Even better news is that the insights gained by the research may have very positive short-term benefits for us in as little as five years.I highly recommend Immortality Inc. I’m guessing that many of us had no idea of what has been going on the past decade– arguably the biggest, most significant scientific research project in the history of mankind and life itself. Chip Walter does a masterful job laying out the back-story, from it’s bold inception on the part of handful of dreamers and visionaries to the current state of what researchers have discovered and what likes ahead. You’ll be pleasantly amazed.
I give it 2* for the spirit and motivation but National Geographic should insist on better research by its authors. The industry overview is limited to a handful of West Coast companies. Many of the scientists in the book have nothing to do with longevity.
Chip uses coloquial language to draw in the reader making for an engaging read on a complicated topic.
Fascinating, entertaining. Gives me hope for the near future.
