Customers Review:

Tessa Gratton is a masterful writer. Her prose sings, her characters are complex (both flawed and wonderfully heroic), and her creative interpretation of Henry IV part 1 is utterly captivating. She returns us to a familiar world, introduced in QUEENS OF INNIS LEAR, but the story and characters are fresh and new. She continues to assess some of the themes present in INNIS LEAR, notably nature, magic, rebellion against patriarchal structures, as well as expanding queer interpretations of the original play. Though the setting, plot, and action are top notch, it was truly her interpretation of the characters that held my heart. The three woman leading this novel, Hal, Hotpsur, and Mora, are beautifully different and complex in their own ways. Their traits take into account the original material, but also expand on it as Gratton deepens the characters’ connections with each other as well as the lands they love. Hal and Hotspur made my heart flutter. I was so enraptured by their tumultuous relationship, bouncing from love to hate and back but always sparking with enormous passion. When Hal tells Hotspur: “What if I love you so well it changes the very landscape of our world?” I think I melted into a puddle. And Mora’s strength of will, determination, and bravery was next level. The story is complex, layered, and so full of marvelous characters I didn’t want to say goodbye to. I can’t sing my praises of this novel, and really all of Gratton’s work, enough. She is a masterful writer. I almost felt drunk off the beauty and elegance in her descriptive prose. It sings.Bottom line: Don’t miss LADY HOTSPUR! (and if you haven’t read QUEENS OF INNIS LEAR, pick up a copy of that too!)
A great fantasy full of beautiful prose and political intrigue. Perfect for fans and not fans of Shakespeare.
Far less historically based than expected.
Two stars from me because this was a struggle all the way through for me. I struggled to read the whole book when what I really wanted to do was put it down for good. I struggled to like any of the characters. I struggled to see how the story had advanced much when I finally finished it. Yes, gender bending, I got that and I was fine with it as something new or different or both but that Shakespeare play isn’t a favorite of mine anyway. Yes, a lesbian love story, but that’s not exactly earth shaking. Yes, court intrigue all over the place, but not very interesting intrigue. Yes, there are magic elements but written in such a way that it was hard for me to grasp exactly what was happening. Add to those things writing which was overblown and flowery to the point of making me laugh. Even the ending wasn’t an ending but a series of let’s-peek-into-the-future segments which seemed to go on much too long. Sadly, not a good fit for me. But I loved the cover.Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan-Tor/Forge for an e-galley of this novel.
Thank you so much to the publisher for the eARC, I just honestly struggled and struggled through almost every page of it, and probably should have DNFd.The book was so long and gave so many minute, slow burning details into every single character’s life, and I didn’t find myself caring about any of it.E ven after enjoying The Queens of Innis Lear at least a little bit, I could never get into Lady Hotspur. The wizard was the one ray of sunshine. The book went from slow, to abstract, to convoluted, to a straight stream of consciousness during some of the interlude chapters, and regardless that I put it down and picked it up a few times it stayed very hard to follow what was going on at times. I love Shakespeare too but this was so wrong! The women were supposed to be such good friends but I never felt that at all. Somewhere in those 600 something pages Gratton could have convinced me they were friends. And Hal, good Lord, a man is not going to impale you during intercourse like a sword. I don’t love reading about LGBQ characters as long as they aren’t ridiculous, but Hal was ridiculous. So were all of them. Attacking each other’s “wells” in a main hallway, yes this is a great idea..Anyway, I really wanted to find some redemption at the end and just did not find it. At all. Not even a bit. The brothers did… What? I think if the whole book turned it down a few notches and stayed on a straighter course it would have had potential.
Lady Hotspur is a remake of Henry IV that breathes new life into the classic play. It is also an extension of Tessa Gratton’s previous adult fantasy, The Queens of Innis Lear, a book that I just adored.Lady Hotspur is a story of love and friendship between three women: two princes (or princesses) and one knight. It is an epic feminist fantasy filled to the brim with fierce warrior women kicking butt and taking names. It has lots of court intrigue and nature magic to keep you intrigued. I found all of the MCs stories compelling, but towards the end I found some of the development lacking there. Tessa’s writing style is impeccable and flawless. The way she tells her stories and her descriptions are just mind-blowingly good. I am amazed that she did such a good job keeping all these story lines coherent and straight. In general, I did like Lady Hotspur, although it did not grip me in the same way as the Queens of Innis Lear. I think it had a lot to do with the lack of character development that just wasn’t as present as it was in her first book, but it is a solid fantasy fans of GOT will devour.
I am truly sad to say I read approximately fifty percent of this book and stopped. Perhaps if I’d read books before this about Innis Lear but honestly I’m really not sure. I can say the three females who dominate this story are interesting but i just sadly didn’t feel pulled in or engaged enough to continue at this time. I absolutely hate stopping a book before the completion so perhaps will revisit when time is not so pressured. Its well written and has a unique slant so definitely very interesting. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
