The characters were excellent. I love that Veronica and Sawyer aren’t perfectly perfect. They each are experiencing something that separates them from the their friends. In turn, it helps to draw them together. It did have a touch of paranormal, which I absolutely loved! The book is told from dual perspectives and gives an insight on each characters true feelings. The story really flowed and was easy to follow. All in all the writing style was very well written. I loved that Katie used a journal from a real life person who was suffering from TB in the early 1900’s. That was easily one of my favorite parts of the book. Then to learn that Evelyn was a real person, MIND BLOWN!Very much enjoyed this YA Romance by Katie McGarry. I highly recommend this one if you’re looking for something lite and run to read! This book resonated so deeply to me, because like both of the main characters, I have, at times, let my past control my present and my future. While this story follows Violet and Sawyer as they work on a paper about ghosts, it goes so much deeper than that into the battles they are fighting privately: Violet and her brain tumor, Sawyer and his turbulent home life and addiction. An incredible story about the lies we tell ourselves and the strength it takes to overcome them – with so many lessons to learn along the way. A+ as always for Katie McGarry! Katie McGarry does it again. I love her books! I fall in love with her characters and can’t help but root for them. I cried, laughed, was pissed off and cheered with joy! Thank you for another great book! This was an amazing book. Loved all the characters and the storyline. Cried a few times too. Recommend this book!!!! Rating: 4.5 StarsWhat happens, when the golden boy and school weirdo pair up for an assignment? They find an unexpected source of support and friendship in one another, which evolves into more. Both Sawyer and Veronica were not dealt the easiest hands in life, and the perception of who they were and the baggage they carried did not necessarily reflect their reality, but they were stronger together than they were apart.Veronica was the quirky weird girlVeronica had lost her mother to brain cancer, and now, facing the truth about her own brain tumor, she vowed not to follow in her mother’s footsteps. She wanted to live each day to the fullest as if the tumor did not exist. The way she celebrated holidays on non-designated days created this picture of Veronica as the social outcast. The reality was that her days were numbered. She wanted to “celebrate” with her friends and family before it was too late. There was pain and suffering, yet she tried to stick to the status quo. Although I didn’t agree with all her choices, I understood her motivation. Still, my heart ached for her and those who loved her.Sawyer was the golden boySawyer looked like the world was his oyster. He was popular and king of the swim team, but he battled demons left and right. He carried a lot of anger towards his father, who left his family. He was also angry with his mother, an alcoholic, who heaped a great deal of responsibility and pressure on him. Then, he had a coping mechanism, which was unhealthy, and it all seemed to be spinning out of control. I wanted to give this kid a great big hug, and then take him away to somewhere, where he could just enjoy the last bit of his childhood. They found comfort in each otherVeronica and Sawyer made a most unlikely couple, but they were fantastic together. Though this may have started out as a purely physical attraction, it grew to be something much deeper, as they both peeked behind the curtain and really saw each other. This was where I got my romance fixes. They came in small doses, but each one was perfection. They faced difficultiesBecause, this was a Katie McGarry book, I expect her to take on some serious topics in a raw and honest way. This story dealt with death, grief, addiction, depression, and serious illness. She took on each issue in multiple ways, and I loved that each issues was attacked from so many different sides. Those varied perspectives allowed me to consider each problem in a different way, and also gave the appropriate depth to the issue at hand. They had a great community to support themWhenever I read a book, where the main characters face so much adversity, I NEED them to have some sort of support system. Yes, Sawyer and Veronica eventually had each other, but before that, they had some really wonderful people in their corners.Veronica’s father wasn’t perfect. He didn’t impose too many rules, but his love for his daughter was undeniable. He was also living with the loss of his wife, but he always made time to Veronica. Whether it be a waffle breakfast or a not-quite-the-holiday celebration, dad did his best to be present.Veronica also had a fantastic group of friends. Scarlet, Leo, Nazareth, and Jesse were her “people”. They loved her and cared for her, and would do just about anything for her.Sawyer was also sort of blessed in the friend area, though he didn’t initially realize it. He enjoyed a wonderful relationship with his little sister, and it was a treat to see them on page together, but he also had two friends, who stepped up their roles, when they really needed to, while his sponsor rounded out his team.OverallThis was a beautifully written and emotional story of love, connection, and appreciating the “now”. In this YA contemporary romance, Katie McGarry does what she does best — delivers a story about two young adults who are forced to grow up too soon and who face some very serious and adult situations. This book has a lot going on.Sawyer loves the rush of adrenaline, and he seeks this to escape his mother who has an addiction. He’s left to take care of things in the household and it’s getting to be a challenge. His family has just moved into a supposedly haunted house, and the upstairs tenant is the “strange” girl from school.Veronica has lots of secrets too, one of those being she sees ghosts. There is a paranormal aspect to this book that makes it slightly creepy and a bit different and I loved it! It adds a bit of a paranormal dash of spice to the story. You can guess where this is story is going when Sawyer and Veronica end up doing a school project together. There’s a lovely relationship blooming here with these two characters finding that they fit together somehow. Even though some of the story is a little predictable, there are some surprises. I loved these two characters. Both have immense situations they are dealing with, and they are good together.I really enjoyed this, especially the historical aspect of the TB hospital and it’s connection to Saranac Lake, one of my favorite places in the northeast. This tale of young love in the face of many challenges kept me turning the pages after a bit of a slow start to the story.A complimentary copy was provided for review. |
