My 8 year old son can not stop saying enough about how much he loves this book! We love the detailed yet still very understandable stories of Jesus that retell elegantly the story of his life, death, and resurrection. They are perfectly age appropriate and thought provoking. Each story has a question at the end to promote meaningful conversation. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful as well. This is an artfully told story of our Savior’s sacrifice!
I was looking for a book that I could use during Lent with my boy (age 5). The book does a good job of incorporating scripture, short narratives based on scripture, questions, and pictures to engage kids. Each day is one page, which is perfect for my son’s attention span. If you are looking for a resource to help make Lent more intentional with your kids, this is a great resource.
Excellent book to lead your family through in preparation for the greatest event in human history! You will enjoy it as much as your children.
Love this Easter Storybook! I really like the questions after each story, I think they will provide great dialog. I will be giving it to my daughter to read to my grandson.
Great storybook with beautiful images!!
I do like the big format of this book, that there is a picture with each story, and that the pictures reflect middle Eastern looking people. The pictures are delightful. There is a recurring theme in this book though that I have issue with and that is that after the garden of Eden people could not love until Jesus came again. That somehow their ability to love had been broken until they believed in Jesus and he restored it during or after his time on Earth..To me it sends the wrong message that only Christians can love and I think that could be very dangerous message. One could conclude that only Christians are capable of love. It also negates a lot of the love that we find in the Old Testament, such as Esther had or that Ruth showed by her duty to her mother-in-law.I thought it ended on a strange note of Plato’s cave without really calling it that, instead merely calling it ‘an allegory.’ It is a wonderful story for teaching, but don’t hide the fact that it is a story from a pagan culture! It is okay that we learn from each other, right? I’m probably the opposite of a political social justice warrior, but fair’s fair. I don’t think the world would have held together without love in it for thousands of years, and I don’t think that the Bible teaches that there was no love from the garden of Eden to the time of Christ either. I’m making a big point about this because it was in about five or six of the stories. There were also three stories about demons or Satan, 1 had Satan and the temptation of Christ as its focus, and another had the possessed man that Jesus drove the demons from you not the herd of pigs. Some very small children might be frightened by those stories. I don’t have an opinion really on if they should or shouldn’t be included, but I just want to note that so the parents can have information that I might want myself in a review.
The Easter Storybook: 40 Bible Stories Showing Who Jesus IsLaura Richie, Ian Dale (Illustrations)This book covers most of the life of Jesus Christ. It begins with Jesus in the Temple and continues through the ascension. Most Easter storybooks concentrate on the time around the crucifixion. However, we know the story did not start there. As stated in the introduction the story started in the beginning when God created heaven and earth. It began with a promise. “God loved His people! So He gave them a way to come close to God and to each other again.” “And God promised that one day a Rescuser would make a way for people to come close to God and each other forever. This book has 40 stories. Each story is one page long. It begins with a short scripture passage. Followed by the story, written in a simple manner so that children 3-8 will understand. It is followed by a question that can open discussion between parent and child. The stories lend children a hint at the true identity of Jesus. The illustrations are beautifully done. Ian Dale has used subdued colors so that you concentrate not on the colors but on the content. If you only purchase one book for your child this year make it this one.
I have six grandchildren who stay with me often so I’m always looking for books we can read together. I saw this one and I loved the concept and ability to read to them about Jesus, especially around Easter. This is a large book with a collection of stories about Jesus’ life and teachings. It’s written for children and even has a letter from the author at the beginning that talks to the child about faith and Jesus. It’s a lovely touch that answers the question, “why are we reading about this man?”The book includes 40 stories. Each story is a page long and includes scripture and narrative from the author. Each story also has a full page illustration. Also, at the end of each story the author asks critical thinking questions about the content, which can be a prompt for deeper discussion or a nice end point to the story. The book also starts with a passage from Isaiah about the Messiah and Jesus, which helps set the stage for the stories.Overall, this is a great book for children to learn about Jesus. Probably best suited in style for children ages 2 to 13 years. Lovely to own or give as a gift.
