The oldest of the Bevere tribe (a la John & Lisa Bevere), Addison proves the adage, ‘the apple doesn’t fall far’ when it comes to communicating Biblical truth, with relatable stories and practical application. The first few chapters will have you evaluating what you may have always believed about Christianity. Not on the essentials, to be sure. However, if you have found that modern Christianity, with all of its pop psychology and personal growth strategies, falls short in the face of hardship and difficulty, then you need this book. For someone in his thirties, Bevere displays a wisdom and depth of a sojourner twice his age. Saints is a book about our identity as believers. It’s a book that calls Christians to discover what Paul termed a “mystery” (Eph. 3). Modern Christianity typically seeks to de-mystify the work of Christ, providing instead a formula for salvation and sanctification. This form of theology often leads to a spirituality that is only an inch deep and focused on doing, rather than being. In my thirty-plus years as a struggling believer, the most impactful and lasting truth I have tethered myself to is that my identity (what Bevere calls the True Self) is hidden in Christ – in his life, death, resurrection, and ascension. As Paul puts it in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”Thanks to Addison Bevere for bringing this soul-saving message to today’s generations, this is a message that any believer who longs to go deeper in their relationship with Christ needs to read and hide deep in their hearts. |
