Book Description

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Les Misérables relates the tales of those who suffer the injustices and moral qualms of life. The manga primarily focuses on the love and struggles of Jean Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, and Marius, before and during the Paris Uprising. While some attractive art nicely expresses their plights and eventual ascent, certain design choices gives the atmosphere too pleasant a feel. A similarly upbeat style works much better for Pride and Prejudice, which takes full advantage of manga’s characteristics. The flowery decorations, screentones, chibi form create a fun and charming tone for this love story and work of social commentary. When Elizabeth encounters Mr. Darcy, they hardly get along, yet slowly their original perceptions change. Sadly, much of their witty dialogue is condensed because of the limited space. King successfully refines these hefty texts down to their core elements. Although both have specific problems regarding characterization, the emotions remain true. Between a quick pace and the use of common English, these adaptations are a much easier format for the reluctant reader, and teens, to enjoy. A few minor issues hardly mar what are faithful translations of the originals, making both of these titles worthy of their esteemed names.—Rachel Forbes, Oakville Public Library, Ontario, Canada Read more Review “This adaptation retains all of the charm and fun of the characters and situations, and is a great way to expose those without the time or inclination to pick up the novel. I can’t think of a better way to experience this story other than reading the original novel.” School Library Journal”P&P is an overly dramatic, incredibly silly romance with much miscommunication and swooning. It’s a perfect shojo story though and transforms into manga very well. This is a great starter for kids or someone who wants to know the story. Or, like me, one who likes to experience the classics in all formats. ” – Four Stars! Customers Review:

I am a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice (and all things Jane Austen), it is easily in my top ten books. I am also in love with manga and anime, so when I found this, I almost cried. Being a 20-year-old male, you might think I am odd, but I truly love this manga. It follows the story well, covering all the major plot points without any trouble; there are a few flaws or little things missing, but not enough to ruin it. I was impressed with how close it was, and the artwork is extremely impressive. It’s so great to have an illustrated P&P journey. This is a must for any fan of Pride and Prejudice. If you aren’t a fan or haven’t read the book (or seen the movie(s)), it’s still easy to get into the story. Manga fans should also get it. Check it out, you will not regret it. Perfection!
Love it. It’s almost as good as the movie. There are a few flaws and a couple things missing, but not enough to ruin it. Great book.
I have been waiting for a manga version of my favorite book and finally, it has arrived. First, I like to say that I love the drawings. The artwork is beautiful and so wonderfully detailed. The drawings are very bold and flowy. However, the style is more Korean than Japanese though. The panels are easy to follow and the words were easy to read. Despite the thickness of the manga, I breezed through it. Also, I bought the hardcover edition and it was worth the extra money. The quality is there in the cover. The pages are your standard manga quality. Now, my main issue would be that parts of the story, the dialogue and characterizations diverged from the original novel. As someone who seen the movies hundreds of time and read the novel dozens of times, the interpretation didn’t stay true. The scenes and dialogue changes felt off. I mean, why would you change anything when the original works? For example, Mr. Hurst got amazingly good-looking for some odd reason. O_o And Darcy. Where do I start? Darcy seems overly dramatic for such a stoic man. It was a little hard to wrap my head around that he was so emotional. He blushed way more than Lizzie. Lizzie was also a bit dramatic but I was okay with it. Other than that, the other characters played their parts well and the story does end up the way it should but with more flair. Off topic, Collins’ design here was so goofy. Love it.So, if you are a Pride & Prejudice purist, do not get this book. You will be vastly disappointed. However, if you don’t mind a variation, give it a shot. And if you have never read the original version, go for it if you love a romantic manga. It was an interesting rewrite with gorgeous drawings to go with it. I was little disappointed it wasn’t exact, but I’m happy to have this manga in any case. You can never have enough Pride & Prejudice.
This manga is as big as a children’s bible! Page after page it took me three days to read it but only because I was so in love with the previous page that i did not want to move on. I immediately had to write a review to spread the amazing story of Jane Austen!! Manga meets the greatest love story of all time, in a way it helps you understand the her work better!
I’m a Pride and Prejudice fan and I have to say that I rather enjoyed this adaptation. It plays up the comedy a bit more, but I found that quite delightful. Oh Mr. Darcy… how you torment me!
I LOVE this anime novel! I’ve read it SEVERAL times B4 already. Can’t wait till the Emma Manga Classics comic book is released!
I love it! Bought this item for my sister for Christmas and she absolutely loves it.
have been so pleased to see the classics being redone in manga. It is such a more approachable format for younger kids
