5 stars for Rachel Maddow, 3 stars for the book. I don’t know if Rachel authorized this bio, but I do know 99.9% of the information in this book is out on the internet, so are the pictures. I think the author took a lot from the internet and did very little else to come up with this book. Dare I say, most of Dr. Maddow’s fans/followers who respect and love her could have written this book.
Rachel Maddow is one of our favorite people. She tells it the way she sees it.Coming from California in one of the only tiny Red sections of the state, she quickly outgrew the conservative beliefs of her hometown and has always considered herself an outsider. This is a good look at some of her family and personal life, as well as the story of how she became the top anchor at MSNBC and the only one that our current president never calls out! Why? Because this woman researches everything. She loves shining the light on the things politicians don’t want us to see or talk about. She is respectful of all of her guests, no matter the political affiliation. I think this is one of the many things we admire her for. She isn’t putting on a show or being flashy, she’s showing you and explaining the facts. Just the facts. And for that, we watch her every time she is on the air.Rachel does not just spout opinions, she walks us through the tangled web of politics today and helps us understand the FACTS.NetGalley/ January 7th, 2020 by Thomas Dunne Books
Sort of boiler plate, but I love Rachel, so I stuck with it. She’s a very eclectic woman and an interesting subject, for sure.
Lisa Rogak takes us along a fascinating journey giving us insights into one of America’s greatest minds. The most important thing I learned in this biography is that Rachel always gives her viewers the TRUTH!
As a serious Rachel “dependee”, I loved this book. In it you learn details about both the intricacies involved in producing her show and the breathless speed at which she operates. You learn facts about her life and how she came to have her own show at such a young age. You learn a bit about her private life (which you want to respect for her sake). You hear about how funny she is and you really wish she was your old friend. What seems to be missing in this too slim book is something more about her unique genius — the avidness she brings to bear as she homes in on the most essential questions of the day. It is clear that her brilliant work stems, in part, from her laser focus, her dogged discipline and her unrelenting schedule. (This will worry you.) What remains elusive may have to do with her eagerness and commitment to truth seeking. You wonder how it is that this zeal runs so very deep in her bones.
The depth of this book would make for a good magazine article. Still, I read it to the end, and you might, too, if you watch her TV show, which I don’t, ’cause I don’t have a TV. The photos were interesting, especially the one of her as a glamorous blonde in high school. I will share this with a Rachel-watching friend and then off to the neighborhood book-share kiosk it goes!
The author did an excellent job of pulling info and quotes from numerous sites to create a fun and informative narrative of Rachel’s life that I found enjoyable and enlightening. The book is shorter than it looks because so many pages at the end are footnotes of all of the sources the author used in writing the book. I loved it.
An easy and extremely interesting book to read. The writing style is fun, and learning a bit about Rachel off-screen is like learning about a relative you’ve never met but greatly admired from afar.
