This is a well researched book that presents a perspective that I have not seen before in my extensive reading about this time period. This book is the type that requires concentration to follow the author’s revelations about a small group of individuals including John Hancock, Robert Morris, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and others who put up personal fortunes to keep the revolution going. The book itself covers the time period from just before the conflict begins to a number of years after.I recommend this book to those who are interested in how finances played a part in the revolution, but caution that this is not a once over lightly read.I received a free Kindle copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher with the understanding that I would post a review on Net Galley, Goodreads, Amazon and my nonfiction book review blog. I also posted it to my Facebook page.
revolution, historical-figures, historical-places-events, historical-research, financial-backingThis is not an unbiased review because we were American Revolutionary War reenactors and are history geeks. But we still learned from the research that the author put into this book. To mention a few things: John Hancock was an experienced smuggler whose ideas were supported by tradesmen and others, the Boston Tea Party dumped in excess of 92,000 pounds of tea but other ports simply refused to allow the tea bearing ships into the harbor. If you didn’t already know, the British viewed the colonies as a cash cow with more money and far fewer poor people than Great Britain. I’m not yet finished with it because family members snatch my e reader, and I know that when I get the print copy it will vanish mysteriously! What I have read is excellent and conversations with others who geek eighteenth century American history indicate that we’ll all want our own copies. I will want the audio, too!I requested and received a free ebook copy from St Martin’s Press via NetGalley. Thank you!
I had a really hard time getting into this book. The majority of the book covers the Revolutionary War with the economics and politics around the economics. Its what i was most interested in, and the part that dragged the most for me. I didn’t feel like i was learning anything new, or details about anything i already knew. The last 6 chapters post-Revolution were more interesting and more detailed as the country worked out economics for the future, but by then i was really ready for the book to be over. Overall, a book I felt like I worked really hard to get through and none of it stuck or was very rewarding for the work.I recieved an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review
Great book

Operations Management: Sustainability and Supply Chain ManagementSeller is great, amazon delivery (i purchased electronic-kindle as well as print edition) is great. but the 12th edition is sneaky in the fact that many question that were from previous 11th edition have been moved to publisher’s “myomlab” which needs separate purchase over and above the cost of purchase of the book. such questions are not even listed at the end of the chapter problems, instead it simply reads “qxyz to qabc are available in myomlab”. publisher claims that many new questions were added. fine, but many questions that were representative of the concepts presented in the various chapters are now missing from end of the chapter problems, especially the ones that were good to practice in class with students (essentially moved myomlab, so people will be forced to buy the textbook and myomlab).its like arm twisting to having purchase myomlab, something that is absolutely unnecessary given the fact that the university already uses learning management system such as blackboard/moodle/ilearn etc. myomlab is not even like cengage or aplia, its archaic, so having students to pay for the cost of textbook and myomlab is just not justified, especially when the students i teach are mostly full time working students, and first generation college attendees.cheap tactical decision from publisher, in my opinion that reduces the value of the textbook. i would have stuck to the previous edition (11th) but they stopped selling/publishing it anymore. I teach operations management for 3 years students in college of business. the material in teh textbook is good, easy to understand with sufficient examples. the textbook provides good balance of stories, examples and quantitative content.
I was really bummed to experience after paying something like$100, that I could only download it to 2 devices. I use 3 devices; computer, i-pad, and phone, depending on location. I feel a bit cheated, when I PURCHASED that digital book. I should be able to put it on as many personal devices as I would like without having to remove it from other devices first. In todays tech centric world if there is going to be a limit on devices for something I purchased it should be like 4 devices to account for new or changing uses (what if I had a reader tablet?). Very unhappy about this purchase.
There was no access card with my book. I unwrapped it and class started yesterday so I cannot return.
So far it is a great format! Easily go between desktop and tablet. Really like the highlighting and note taking ability with this ‘not normal Kindle’ format.Only downside so far is that apparently the book has some ‘overlays’ in it that did not transition to this format (pg 168). Basically only got the page, without the overlay sheets (books states there are four). This is a big gap in the example data.
Great book but -3 stars for the Kindle Version. It was annoyingly difficult to smoothly scroll to problems while working on homework problems. Even though it costs a lot more, get the hard copy of this book, and re-sell later if you want. I’d personally keep this book as a good reference because I plan on using the formulas and methods/math from Business Operations Management in my work life.
Working on a Logistics degree. Arrived on time. Good quality. Good price, cheapest I found it anywhere.
It explained some concepts well but some not so much. It was a good choice for my class and overall it was a good text.
Needed this for a class, the price was affordable, and in good condition.

Book Description

Review “Koh’s book is a tremendous gift. We’re so fortunate to have this literary reckoning from a tremendously talented writer. The Magical Language of Others is a wonder.” – The San Francisco Chronicle“A haunting, gorgeous narrative…lushly told. Brilliant.” – The Star Tribune“Magnificent. … This is a memoir that needs to be read more than once.” – Seattle International ExaminerThe Magical Language of Others is a masterpiece, a love letter to mothers and daughters everywhere.” – Shelf Awareness, starred review“A powerful look at family, culture, language, and selfhood.” – Book RiotThe Magical Language of Others is an exquisite, challenging, and stunning memoir. E. J. Koh intricately melds her personal story with a broader view of Korean history. Through these pages, you are asked to experience one family’s heartbreak, trauma, and complex love for each other. This memoir will pierce you.” – Crystal Hana Kim, If You Leave Me“In The Magical Language of Others, E.J. Koh writes of the boundary, between anonymity and naming, between absence and abandonment, between cruelty and safety for four generations of mothers and daughters, each speaking with an occupied heart and crossing narrative borders between Korea, Japan, and America.  As a reader, you give yourself over to her narrative territory and the resetting of the borders of lineage, language, and lives lost.” – Shawn Wong, Homebase and American Knees“This memoir broke my heart. The tragedies that filled the lives of Koh’s mother and grandmothers are woven into mythic, magic tales in Koh’s hands. Only by Koh’s grace and mastery are we not crushed by the stories within The Magical Language of Others. I could read this book a thousand times over.” – Sarah Blake, Naamah“E.J. Koh’s The Magical Language of Others grapples with intergenerational loss and love between mothers and daughters across time, war, and immigration. Koh’s painful journey is bridged by her mother’s letters, which she translates, unfolding the language of mothering and tenderness. Koh remarkably and beautifully translates the language of mothers as the language of survivors.” – Don Mee Choi, author of Hardly War“Indisputably brilliant. I read The Magical Language of Others in a single sitting–all the while never wanting it to end.” – Jeannie Vanasco, Things We Didn’t Talk About When I Was a GIrl Read more About the Author E. J. Koh is the author of poetry collection A LESSER LOVE, winner of the Pleiades Editors Prize (Louisiana State U. Press, 2017). Her poems, translations, and stories have appeared in Boston Review, Los Angeles Review of Books, World Literature Today, among others. She is the recipient of The MacDowell Colony and Kundiman fellowships, 2017 ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship, and is Runner-Up for the 2018 Prairie Schooner Summer Nonfiction Prize. Read more

Magnanimity. It has been several years since a book compelled me to stay awake into the wee hours of the morning finishing it, and yet E.J. Koh’s extraordinary, magnanimous memoir, The Magical Language of Others, did just that. Eun Ji’s recounting of her relationship with her mother and family over the last 20 or so years exhibits power and grace in poetic (not surprising, given her experience and success as a poet) prose.I particularly enjoyed the description of Eun Ji’s recounting of her experiences persevering, coming of age, and ultimately triumphing. Her journey to forgiveness is a paradigm of magnanimity. Even more riveting, the parallels raised by her description of the lives of her grandmothers brought to mind the incredible writing and stories of Min Jin Lee (Pachinko), Krys Lee (Drifting House) and Crystal Hana Kim (If You Leave Me). I could not offer higher praise. One of Eun Ji’s mother’s letters offers the advice that “[w]hat we see changes according to what we look for.” In The Magical Language of Others, I was looking for a moving story. The book beautifully offers that and then some. It will undoubtedly touch common elements in each reader’s experience, while at the same time providing a poignant context of one woman’s (and one family’s) history, experience, love and compassion. Finally, a note on the audiobook (I so wanted to finish the book to see what became of the Koh family that I purchased it as well): E.J. Koh’s reading of her own memoir is heartbreaking at times, calming at others, and riveting throughout. Highly recommend, and I’m overjoyed that this was my first read of 2020.
An odd family, mentally ill in my judgment. Korean immigrant parents in California leave 15-year-old daughter and slightly older son and move to Seoul for 7 years. Nothing makes sense, the writing is scattered and disjointed, and the overall impression is of a family and author unable to create meaningful connections.
The book itself is beautiful. The writing is sharp, beautiful, painful, and wrenching. When the author discovered her love of poetry, I felt the shift in the memoir was beautifully done. I loved the use of her mothers letters and that there were no easy answers. Relationships between parents and children are wrought and loving and hard–my experiences are different but I appreciated how honestly and beautifully the author got this. I’ve recommended to many friends and students looking to “make sense” of those dynamics.
This is a powerfully poignant collection of letters that is woven into a beautiful tale of love. Though her mother uses loving language in her letters, EJ Koh remains true to her own voice and shows us her perspective and the painful side of growing up without the everyday support and physical presence of her parents. Such a wonderful read.
Did not finish, but what I did read both offended me and disturbed me, and the writing absolutely was not strong enough to make up for that. The first issue I have with the book is that it used a gruesome scene in which a dog catches and destroys a pet parakeet as a plot point almost directly after the book started. To me, tales of animal (as well as children) suffering/torture always qualify as a form of emotional manipulation on the part of the author, unless you are reading horror and you’re expecting that sort of gore. The second issue is that the twisted true story behind this book might be interpreted as “cultural”- the author’s parents got a lucrative job offer in Korea when the author was 15, and left her alone in the US to take that job. The author’s parents literally dropped the author off at her college-age brother’s place to return to Korea and had limited contact with her from that point on. The author’s parents were NOT impoverished when they left- they just wanted the most they could get, and they justified it by saying it would improve their childrens’ lives.I myself am a child of first generation parents from an impoverished background, and my parents are not exactly warm and cuddly, but there’s no way they would just abandon me at 15 to go back to their homeland for a lucrative job, college tuition or not. And as a mother of a 14 year old, the idea of just dropping off my daughter at a college age person’s home (even if it was her brother) and just abandoning her and justifying it by a lucrative job position is outrageous. My big issue with this is not just that it happens, but the book frames it as being more of a cultural thing than mental illness. Believe me, I do understand the cultural importance in financial security *too* well, but this is an extraordinary situation that could happen to a person of ANY culture. And I worry that the readers of this book will just use this whole memoir as yet another way to vilify Eastern Asian cultures as cold and obsessed with material wealth. It just didn’t sit right with me, and I literally couldn’t read the book. It’s just a distant, cold, removed story of a life gone awry, and the translated letters of a breezy unconcerned mother who seemed to be existing on another planet.

Get this book! Both you and the children in your life will love it. The story is wonderfully engaging and the illustrations lovely. If you aren’t already a sea glass collector, you’ll want to immediately go to the beach after finishing the story to find your own sea glass treasures. The story may also pique your interest to researchfurther the history of the main character. Great book!
This book is one that can be read to younger age groups for an understanding of life not always going as planned or expected. At the upper elementary level, this picture book is one that allows students to dig deep into being shattered, moving forward with the tide, connecting with others, and finding a deeper meaning/purpose in life. The Sea Glass Treasure, allows students to think beyond the printed word.
What a beautiful book that makes you think and dream. Where do those incredible jewels we find on our beach adventures come from? We read this with our 7-year old and she immediately wanted to read it again. The illustrations make you feel like you’re in a water color painting. This book makes us want summer to be here now. I hope we see more from this writer in the future.
Such a colorful, fun book about sea glass and its wondrous adventures. I love the bold font on each page to capture the attention of the readers. The watercolor illustrations are beautiful & really compliment the story.I bought 4 copies for all of my grandchildren to enjoy and one for myself of course!
A delightful story of a greenish glass bubble and it’s journey to becoming a sea glass treasure. A catchy cadence and beautiful illustrations will engage children. The book will also inspire future sea glass hunts, and imagine stories of the sea glass.
I LOVE this book!! My 4 grandchildren loved it as well….My twin granddaughters, who are 6 yrs. old…have started collecting seaglass and rocks and this book was a perfect story to tell them…THANK YOU Shelly Peters for the great story!
As a teacher, I highly recommend this story for the classroom. The illustrations are beautiful and the author creates the journey that is a life lesson that pertains to all of us.
A sweet story about the life of sea glass with a lesson to be learned. My girls, ages 4, 6, and 8, all really enjoyed the book and the beautiful water color illustrations.

I’ve been waiting as patiently as possible for my next quest -“No quests.”Right. So I’ve been counting the days until I was finally able to spend more quality time with my fellow Waywards and today we went to the Moors! Who’s ‘we’? I travelled with the girl with the “perpetual sugar buzz”, the “Goblin Prince in Waiting”, the girl “with the ocean in her hair”, a mad scientist, the boy with the bone flute and the girl “with the lightning-powered heart”. Travelling by lightning hasn’t been this much fun since I hitched a ride in a Delorean!Having completed my most anticipated read of 2020 less than a fortnight into the year I now feel like I’ve wandered into a bittersweet limbo. I’m absolutely elated that, after a year of anticipation, my expectations (which were skyscraper looking down on clouds high) didn’t overshadow my enjoyment. I’m proud of myself for savouring the experience, appreciating every sentence rather than bingeing the entire book in one sitting. I’m sad that I can never read this book for the first time ever again. I want to gush to anyone who will listen to me about every sentence I highlighted, every character, plot point, what I hope will happen next, what I fear will happen next … but spoilers.“But I warn you, this isn’t a tale for the faint of heart. It is a story of murder, and betrayal, and sisterly love turned sour.”I will tell you though, although this was not her story, Sumi was the standout wayward for me in this book. She somehow kept managing to snag the best lines and I don’t know which one of us this says more about but I understood every piece of Nonsense she uttered. I love that she gets to the heart of the issue and asks the truly important questions, like “Why is the village of scary fish-people where you get your chocolate biscuits?”One of the first things I tell anyone about me is that ‘Every Heart a Doorway’ is my all time favourite book. I don’t care that I’m an adult; I will be searching for my door for the rest of my life and if you are also seeking admittance to your door, regardless of how different our true worlds look, I will consider you a kindred spirit.Usually when I read a new addition to a beloved series there’s an anxiety that accompanies me. I’ve often found that the shine of the first book can be smudged when follow up books don’t meet my expectations. I’m aware that the pedestals I place books I love on can be difficult to reach and that’s part of the problem. So you’d think I’d be especially nervous whenever I begin a new ‘Wayward Children’ book but I have absolute faith that my hopes, no matter how seemingly unrealistic they are, are safe with Seanan and she’s never let me down.“New things are the best kind of magic there is.”I don’t want this series to ever end. I want to visit every world. I want to secure a room at Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children while I wait for my own door to open. So far, none of the worlds I’ve visited with my fellow waywards have been my own, although I’ve caught glimpses of it in several. I fully expect that one day Seanan will write about my world and while I’m reading that story my book will magically transform into my very own door. I’m sure!If you haven’t already read the first four books of this series, please remedy that ASAP before reading this one. Then you can join me as I begin the interminable wait for January 2021.Since I highlighted so much of this book that I probably should have just gone ahead and highlighted it all, it’s practically impossible to choose a favourite sentence. This is the one that spoke the loudest to me when I reread all of my highlights:“No one should have to sit and suffer and pretend to be someone they’re not because it’s easier, or because no one wants to help them fix it.”If anyone needs me I’ll be reading the sixth book in the series.[But it’s not released yet.]“Hey! Don’t you go getting logical rules on my illogical life plans”[I’m serious. You must wait for another excruciatingly long year before you are allowed to continue this journey.]“This is the awful sprinkles on the sundae of doom.”
In an effort to remain relatively spoiler free, leta keep it vague:Every installment of the Wayward children just drags me in more.In CTD, we return back to the Moors at Jack’s behest to help her save the world that she loves. Kade, Christopher, Sumi, and Cora rush off to help their friend in need, breaking Eleanor’s “No Quests” rule. Again.A mix of old monsters and new, friends who love and somewhat fear you, pony & bones.I think almost every book in this series has had me in tears and smiling, sometimes at the same time, and CTD is no exception in that regard. Jack is one of my favorite wayward children and getting more of her and her world is a treat.I’d have read it in one sitting if allowed.
I’ve been singing the praises of Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series ever since reading the first book, Every Heart a Doorway, when it came out in 2016. Every following year since then, McGuire has released a new installment, and I’ve dutifully read every single one, thinking they were each a gift.⠀⠀It’s a series that I love. That much is true. But it’s also been a series that has been, in retrospect, somewhat hit or miss for me, too.⠀This was very much a miss for me. Which is disappointing, seeing as how this book follows Jack and Jill, two of my favorite characters in this series (for my money, Down Among the Stick and Bones, the second installment of the series, and the first that was centered around them, is probably the best out of the whole bunch). ⠀⠀Some spoilers for the previous books ahead….⠀⠀⠀⠀Come Tumbling Down, the fifth entry in the series, picks up where Every Heart a Doorway left Jack and Jill: with murderous Jill dead at the hands of Jack, who drags her body back to their dark world of the Moors, where she can easily be resurrected. Jack is successful in this regard, only to have her body snatched by her sister, who means to use it — much to Jack’s complete chagrin — for Dark Purposes that put the whole of the Moors in cataclysmal danger. After a personal tragedy, Jack is compelled to reach out to her former fellow students at Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children and ask for their help in restoring the balance her world demands and that she so desperately craves.⠀⠀The premise is intriguing enough, but the payoff ultimately falls short. There are exciting, nerve-wracking stakes that are introduced very suddenly… only to be waved away just as quickly. The writing is still characteristically gorgeous (McGuire’s writing has always been the star of the Wayward Children books, after all), but a lot the dialogue feels stilted and forced this time around, the characterization clunky and awkward. There’s just a lot here that just didn’t click for me, in the end.⠀The slightly spotty portrayal was the main thing that felt out of place for me for me, the most egregious example being Sumi, a character who veers totally into tropeish underestimated-ingenue-who-is-also-profound-and-wise territory. How every other character in this story keep thinking of her as just a simple-minded Cloudcuckoolander when her every other declaration is nothing but pure perspicacity is beyond me. It’s frustrating.⠀If I’m being fastidious, it’s only because you are always a little harder on your favorites.⠀⠀The way McGuire releases these books is that she alternates between time periods: one book will follow the School story in the present, and the other will follow one of their characters in the past, as they stumble upon their doors and find out what lies on the other side. I’ve enjoyed the latter books a lot more. They may come from the more traditional portal fantasy mold, but that is a form of storytelling of which I am fond. And besides, knowing what the future holds for many of these characters adds a bittersweet angle to these stories, which I also appreciate. I like my fairy tales fairly full of melodrama.⠀Do I still think these books are a gift? Yes, of course I do. As previously mentioned: the preeminent star of these stories is Seanan McGuire’s own prose, which is as ethereal and rhapsodic as ever, and which makes her less than stellar work shine far brighter than most.⠀⠀You are always a little harder on your favorites, but every Wayward book is still an endowment from the world on the other side of the door, and is appreciated as such.
I read all the other books in this series, pre-ordered the kindle book, and I was super excited to read this today. I agreed with where the book was going, and with the conclusion, but I felt like it didn’t transition as smoothly as the other parts of the story. The narrator had a very specific tone in “Down Among the Sticks and Bones” that wasn’t replicated here. I felt like the book focused too much on the horror of the Moors, and not the contrasting humanity. The mental illness discussion seemed unnecessary – being in the wrong body (literally) could make someone deeply uncomfortable for a variety of psychological or magical reasons. There were still a number of interesting and poignant moments, but overall, the feel was a little off for me. I’ll see how I feel when I re-read it later.

Looking for more fun with the mouse reporter Geronimo Stilton and his family and friends? This is my favorite volume out of four thus far in the “Geronimo Stilton Reporter” series published by Papercutz. This story first takes place with Geronimo Stilton’s nephew Benjamin being on a field trip with his school at the Museum about ancient Egypt. A kid wandering around saw someone that looked like a mummy and went screaming back to his classmates which caused quite a commotion. Later Benjamin goes over to his uncle Geronimo Stilton and tells him about it and urges his uncle to investigate as a possible news story since Geronimo is a news reporter. Reluctantly Geronimo agrees and his sister Thea and cousin Trap joins along for the adventure! There were some twists and turns and suspense that I really enjoyed in this graphic novel; my daughters were committed with their full attention as I read it to them and they were literally off the edge of their seat when I read it to them. I love that this story is a mystery with mystery one on who was the person dressed up as a mummy and secondly why was the treasure or prize the “mummy” was after? Readers will find out in the end!The illustration for this book was well done. My girls enjoyed it.NOTE: This book was provided to me free by Papercutz and Net Galley without any obligation for a positive review. Customers Review:

I admit I was nervous when I learned there was going to be a sequel to The Start of Me and You. I was so happy with how things ended with Paige and Max I was terrified where it would go. But I am also an Emery Lord fangirl so there was no way I wouldn’t read it. That being said it is safe to say that The Map from Here to There demolished my feelings and added a whole new level to Paige and Max’s relationship that just deepened my love for them. The Map from Here to There was a tough read for me. Paige was driving me a crazy for a lot of the book because she refused to talk to people. But the more I read the more I understood where she was coming from and what she was feeling. Being 17/18 is hard. Things are going to change no matter what and you have to come to terms with that. You have to make a decision that could effect the rest of your life and that is no easy task. So as much as she was bugging me, I also related to her. And then there was Max. The poor boy didn’t know which end was up. He was confused by everything going on with him and Paige, about picking a college, of building a relationship he thought he had let go of.Everything about these two was emotional and messy and honestly I think the beauty of Paige and Max was how messy things got and how wonderful they both were. I basically cried the last 25% of the book because of how messy and wonderful Emery Lord made these two characters. What started out as a tough read (admittedly out of my own fear) because this gorgeous story of two young people just trying to find their way under all kinds of pressure from everything around them.If you haven’t picked up an Emery Lord book yet you are missing out on her masterful story telling. Will you need tissues reading this one? Absolutely. Is it worth the ugly crying? 1000% yes. Just do yourself a favor and read The Start of Me and You and The Map from Here to There. You won’t be disappointed.
I have waited a very long time to get more of Max and Paige’s story. This book did not disappoint!
This is an excellent follow-up to the Start of Me and You!
I’m so glad this book is OVER! It’s so long, and it felt like one giant field trip through angstville. I read the first book in the series and thought it was okay, so I gave the second one a shot and really wish I hadn’t wasted my time. All the forward strides Paige makes in book one are backpedaled, and she’s a fairly unlikable person in his book. She says mean things, she does some mean things, and then she’s like, “Hey, anxiety,” like that should forgive all. It took WAAAAAY too long for her to own up to her own mistakes. And once she finally did, the book felt readable. Too bad that was basically the end.It was also pretty irritating that the relationship we all waited for through book one was barely present in book two. It starts out with Paige feeling nonsensically self conscious, and then the author skips over all the cute new-couple moments, and speeds straight into Majorproblemville. It was disappointing, it was exhausting, and it was tedious. I got so tired of being inside Paige’s head. I’ve read books where the main character has anxiety before, and felt like it was handled much better. Kasie West’s By Your Side comes to mind. This just felt like so many things going wrong that could’ve easily been avoided, and again, so much drama. My 15 year old, the target audience for this book I might add, was put off. Her thoughts? “There’s already so much angst and negativity and anxiety in real life. Why would I want to read about more?” Pretty much.I get wanting people to be able to find themselves in a book, finding relatable characters and so forth, but that shouldn’t mean the book itself should be a total downer.
ARC from Edelweiss and NetgalleyThe Map From Here to There is the follow up to Emery Lord’s wildly popular The Start of Me and You. Fans were clamoring when they found out they were going to get more of Paige and Max, and with good reason. It was a long road of self discovery and learning to be vulnerable to find their way together. This, in all likelihood, should be a shoo-in of a good read for me. Yeah…not so much. Fair warning – there was little I found to like about this book, so this will be a rant review. There will be people, I’m sure, who will say that I’m not the ‘target’ audience for this book. I would argue that as a huge fan of the first story, I’m an excellent candidate to read this book. Whether I had a positive experience reading it or not.So you know that nice relationship glow that lasts for a little while right after you get together? Yeah. There was none of that here. And quite frankly, this book almost felt insulting. It was like the author was afraid I’d think Paige and Max were going to live happily ever after, so there was a desperate need to show me otherwise. Even if she had to pull Paige and Max out of character to take me there. Not at all reminiscent of the heroine I came to know and love in the first book, Paige just came of as judgey and jealous. All of the growth in first book was killed in this one; I read another review that said all of the progress made in the first book was undone, and I couldn’t agree more.So I’m not going to go over every aspect of this book, but I will touch on the reasons it was such a miss for me. For one, there was the appearance of a character named Hunter that felt like a half-assed attempt at a love triangle, and it felt so contrived. Max spent most of this book confused, and who could blame him? It was so weird and all on Paige, until the end where something had to be pinned on him, so another contrived situation rears its ugly head.Though it covered some serious topics, the first book had a hopefulness and lightness to it that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I expected that here. If you’re also looking for that in this installment, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. It was just misery, not very good angst, and you guessed it – all things contrived. This book basically felt like a young woman who didn’t have enough drama in her life and felt the need to create some. EVERYTHING was blown out of proportion, and while I can give a teenager a break and say that can be indicative of their age or inexperience, it didn’t feel inline with Paige’s character from The Start of Me and You.I will say that at around 75% of this book, things did start happening that felt monumental and authentic, but was so over Paige that I couldn’t even give the plot line the benefit of the doubt. In the end, The Map From Here to There felt disjointed and unplanned, and aside from Max, there was nothing to enjoy. I’m sure you’ll see this book crop up again – in my most disappointing reads of 2020.

Customers Review:

‘Bout damn time, girl!! NOW, you fans of Ellery Adams must read the story to understand just what exactly this means. But now to the full review!!Fiction imitates reality, and the every present, torrential rainstorms in the town of Miracle Springs, NC is no exception. As I read this book, my own river was forming in my backyard, and I could sympathize/emphatize with Nora and her friends. A new visitor to Miracle Springs and seems to be inned of the bibliotheraphy Nora offers, plus the healing powers of that special scone. We are introduced to a young Cherokee potter and his wife who give us insights into the Cherokee heritage of the region and the sudden death of the young man brings all out friends together to solve the death of this young man. His family and friends the solution to the mystery, but also uncover more personal revelations about themselves. We also find a new barista, with new food and drinks. I still do not understand how I am ravenous after each reading session.Although I reside in NC, NC girl born and reared, I still can’t seem to find Miracle Springs, except in my heart and mind as I read Ms. Adams books. I’m ready to take up permanent residency. On my second “reading” of the book as my audio book was available today.I am truly a happy camper with a new book at hand.
I adore these books and have already pre-ordered my eBook copy since finishing the eARC. The series just keeps getting better! Nora and her ecclectic crew a just such a sweet and heartwarming cast of characters. Every time I open one of the books in this series it feels like going back to a well known community. Like in Adam’s other series, Books by the Bay, each chapter is headed with a literary quote that has some significance to the chapter. There were some new characters in this book, and I really loved them. My favorite was Sheldon. I liked how he accepted everything that he was, knew his limitations, but still insisted on doing everything he liked. He has a lot of charm and spunk, plus he brought something new to the group of friends. I think fans are going to love him! for me, this is a five star book!On the adult content scale, there’s language, violence and some sexual content as well as talk of living with an addiction. None of it’s too over the top… I would say, maybe, 16 and older? Let’s give it a five.I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book from Netgalley and Kensington Books in exchange for an honest review. My thanks!
Just loved this book. The society is growing emotionally and even added a new member. This is just a feel good all around story. Can’t wait for the next one!!!!
Ellery Adams is a brilliant author. Her latest book, The Book of Candlelight is a powerful addiction to The Secret Book and Scone Society series. The characters are so complex and intriguing. Adams has a gift for creating characters that are deep, loyal and caring. Thus it is easy for the reader to care about what is going to happen, how the characters are going to react and support each other. The overall plot was interesting and never dull. The language and imagery in this book was lyrical and beautiful. I honestly did not want this book to end. I wanted to read and know more and more about these people, who almost seem real to me. It is going to be very difficult to wait an entire year for another book in this series. So I guess I will have to be satisfied with reading The Book of Candlelight all over again.
I love the description of characters. I could almost smell the roses! I usually spend read but not with this book. I took it slow and savored every word.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the first two books of this series, but this third one has been the best, by far. I laughed, I cried, I thought, and I pondered. This book struck the chord of my soul and made it cry out in wonder. Four broken women, healed by their friendship, and sharing their secrets with one another. Each giving of themselves through their own specific way of helping others. I HIGHLY recommend this whole series, but especially this book!
I will be recommending to my book club. These 4 women have created a bond that is beyond ordinary friendship. The love of books can take you many places.
Please continue adding more stories to the Secret, Book, & SconeSociety series. Have enjoyed this more than I can say. I usually only read kindle un!imited books because of finances. But had to read all 3 of these. I am hooked. I want to go back & read some of the books mentioned in this trilogy. And—–my vote is for Sheriff McCann for Nora. The original Scottish pronunciations is scone , like gone.

Book Description

Review “An art historian profiles women artists who overcame adversity in order to achieve professional success. Some of the most accomplished women in the art world of the past five centuries faced difficulties, great and small, in the pursuit of their crafts. Despite their hardships, the women profiled in this book used their talents and left their marks. Each profile begins with a dramatic moment in the artist’s life: meeting a queen, narrowly escaping the guillotine, surviving sexual assault by a teacher, and attending the 1939 New York World’s Fair. The role of this seminal experience in the artist’s life is then explained as the lens widens to describe the artist’s family life, training, style, and impact on the art world. The artists’ personal and professional lives are seamlessly entwined, and the personal fortitude of each woman is evident in the details of her story. Images of the artist and her work are included as well. While not everyone covered here triumphed during their lifetime—Augusta Savage stopped making art and lived in poverty, for example—their contributions to the world of art and culture and their examples as daring, passionate creatives are fascinating. The artists portrayed are diverse in ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, and their chosen media. Well-chosen and well-told, these artists’ stories will inspire artists and nonartists alike.” —Laura Simeon, Kirkus Reviews”Gr 8 Up–Heroism takes many forms; not all acts of bravery involve battlefields or daring rescues. The artists and art professionals featured in this collection displayed courage in various ways. Each woman overcame challenges to beat formidable odds: sexism, racism, poverty, and homophobia. Several attained success and respect by taking bold, innovative creative risks. One painter took the stand to confront her rapist. A curator and an art detective recovered priceless stolen treasures. The former outsmarted Nazis, and the latter went toe-to-toe with wily thieves. For more than two decades, a conservator painstakingly restored a ruined Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece. Frida Kahlo won international acclaim while living with multiple disabilities and battling severe pain. These fascinating notables, representing different eras (from the Renaissance to the present), nations, ethnicities, and disciplines, are described in 17 brief, well-written, fact-filled chapters. Their stories are relayed in an admiring, conversational tone; clipped sentences promote dramatic, fast-paced reading. Excellent color reproductions of artworks and photos (in the case of historical artists, painted portraits) of the subjects heighten the visual appeal. Colored-background pages, interspersed throughout, also enhance the book’s attractiveness. VERDICT Recommended for public and school libraries; while not essential, it would be useful as supplementary biographical fare for strong, mature readers in women’s studies and art history classes.” —Carol Goldman, School Library Journal  Read more About the Author Art historian Eugene Pool taught at two of the nation’s most eminent private high schools. Customers Review:

The author has done legions of young artists a great service. He has profiled a number of women artists through the ages, showing what obstacles they overcame and how they made a difference. Some are well-known and some not so much, but the stories of their lives all deserve to be told. It’s aimed at a young adult audience, perhaps, but as an older an artist, I enjoyed it a great deal. The illustrations are superb. It makes the case for creating art!
Heroic Women reveals the history of many women artists from the Renaissance to modern times for young adult and adult readers through almost incredible stories of adversity overcome and heroic achievement. The brief biographies intrigue this reader to learn more, to dig deeper. A rich bibliography offers many avenues for further study. I’d like to see this book on the shelf of every middle and high school art teacher, and in the hands of every sensitive, curious student.I could only echo the previous reviewers’ praise. Better instead to send copies to appropriate educator and artist friends for their children. Another splendid publication from Tumblehome, and a triumph for author, Eugene Pool.Hurrah for Maya Lin and the Guerrilla Girls! We need you now more than ever.
As an artist, college professor, and grandmother of two girls, I love this book. I’m eager to give each of my granddaughters a copy. In compelling words, each chapter tells the story of a woman artist, or a woman who played a significant role in the world of art. I appreciate that I learned new details and gained insights about the lives of many artists whose work I knew and that I was introduced to artists whose work I hadn’t known. Eugene Poole describes the artist’s work and contributions, places her in the context of her times, and gives us a biography that includes each woman’s personal life and the struggles she experienced just to do her work and to be who she wanted to be. In one beautifully illustrated volume, we travel the globe and see the significant work of artists from the 1500 up to today. What an inspiration for any girl or young woman to read and see! This is a wonderful contribution to art history.
I picked up this book expecting to LEARN about interesting female artists throughout history. What I didn’t expect was how much I would FEEL as I read the experiences of female artists following their passion and talent in a world that was largely unwelcoming and often, overtly hostile. Eugene Poole’s research is impeccable and his ability to create vivid scenes that bring us back into the lives of these women is both informative and inspiring. My teenage daughter and I have taken to reading a chapter together over breakfast to set the tone for the day. If Sofonisibla Anguissola, Artemi Gentileschi, Augusta Savage and other woman featured in this book can overcome monumental challenges, what can we do? !
This book is a who’s who of women that we should be inspired by! A fabulous book for any young person looking for inspiration. This is a fabulously diverse collection of female artists whose contributions to culture, art, and society are and will be everlasting. Pool’s choice of artists from an array of media is impactful and inspiring and kept me reading.
An excellent book for anyone interested in women in the arts. Besides the more well-known artists–Frida Khalo, Annie Leibovitz–Pool also introduces readers to people who play other roles in the art world, including conservators, investigators, architects, and law enforcers. The coverage begins in the 16th century and continues to contemporary times. A great purchase for libraries and for art lovers.
“Heroic Women of the Art World” is a delight. I raced through it and then mailed it to my daughter in college. These harrowing stories of bravery, defiance, and dedication—yes, they persisted!—will inspire artists of all genres and ages. Beautiful reprints. Thrilling stories. Recounting the tumultuous lives of 16 leading women in art, Pool has assembled an anthology that belongs on the shelf of every aspiring artist. Overcoming poverty, rape, and sexism, these heroines—from Berthe Morisot to Augusta Savage to The Gorilla Girls—stayed true to their visions and honored their gifts.
This was a very readable and interesting book! I am a high school art history teacher, and there were a few artists with whom I was unfamiliar; I also learned something new about the artists that I teach on a regular basis, so it was well worth the time to read it. It is geared towards a adolescent/teenage audience both in writing and content and makes an excellent companion to a unit on women artists or women in art.

If you love cauliflower and mushrooms this is your book. I do love mushrooms but don’t really know what Tipo00 flour is, HP sauce, canned lentils and some precooked multi grain. I really know all of these things but I’m going to guess a lot of people might not.
all in Chef Jamie Oliver’s VegGlorious style “Ultimate Veg” is not just another vegetarian cookbook. According to Jamie, he spent over 8 years traveling the globe collecting and perfecting the recipes for this volume, his admitted labor of love. I found the collection of recipes to be organized well and to include a few categories that were not the same old thing: PIES, PARCELS, & BAKES; TRAYBAKES; BURGERS & FRIES; BRUNCH. There’s a bunch more of the usual suspects. Each recipe includes a list of ingredients and a step by step tutorial from the chef, in what I’m calling “Jamie Speak” – he’s got some unique turns of phrases that I’m sure have British colloquial roots:”reduce by half before scrunching in the tomatoes”; “bring to a boil then leave to tick away for 5 minutes”; “broil until beautifully golden and gnarly”; “ripple a good few shakes”. Sure livens up the recipe! Also included for each recipe is a full color photograph of the finished dish and expanded nutritional values – thank you very much. So, in the infamous words of Kermit, “It’s good to be green” and yellow, red, orange…
The book itself is not sturdy. I have been waiting since the middle of last year when I started following Jamie on his Facebook page. I preordered in November… and waited not so patiently… the first time I opened the book to read the cover started coming off. I have been waiting a looong time for this book… I’m not waiting any longer, Im not returning the book just to turn around and have to wait again. I travelled to a few stores yesterday looking for ingredients. Made veggie pad Thai. As I was putting together the recipe I was getting nervous my kids would not like it. Not to worry, even fussy mr 4 gobbled it up. Mr 10 was surprised at how dull he was, but the best reaction was from my husband… he asked “is this hard to put together?” I said no (the hardest part was gathering the ingredients… seriously I went into the pantry and could not find anything- and they were right in front of my face… hoping clean eating will help fix this foggy brain) then the hubster said he could eat it all the time and packed up the leftovers for his work tomorrow. That is the ultimate praise. That man loves his food, loves his meat, but is willing to try changing his lifestyle to save his life. Thanks Jamie Oliver. My only complaint is the binding.
The grammar is so terrible i cannot follow the directions. Really disappointing.
I purchased the Ultimate Veg Kindle Edition with hesitation. You never know if there will be pictures of all the recipes or macros/nutrition information listed. It seems I was worried about nothing because this one has BOTH!! I’m not sure about the reviews with metric units, I can guarantee my edition (Ultimate Veg) is imperial (US) – screenshot attached of the macros and first few ingredients for the puff pastry sheet pan pizza. Also important to note, all of the ingredients are “normal” items you can find in a regular grocery store, and there aren’t a ton of ingredients per recipe. If you’re not looking to go full on vegetarian/vegan, but just want to easily add a couple extra plant based meals to your week, this is a great way to get started. Jamie makes cooking – and cooking healthily for your family – so accessible.
I will confess that I love all of what Jamie Oliver does. From his cookbooks, his Italy series and all his cooking videos, etc. Jamie is a genius with food. All of his recipes work. Jamie’s unpretentiousness and his deep love for food comes through on every page in this new book. These are the most creative and exotic recipes on vegetables I have ever seen. LOVE LOVE this cookbook! ❤️
The book is beautiful and in brand new condition, as advertised. I love a good hardcover with outstanding quality of both the cover and the pages. As for content, it’s easy to follow. Many recipe books aren’t always realistic for an average cook like myself. Ingredients are interesting, but not out of reach. Jamie Oliver keeps the recipes do-able and the one dish I’ve prepared (with a couple very minor modifications) turned out fantastic. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. You don’t have to be a vegan or vegetarian to benefit from this book.
This is an absolutely beautiful book the pictures are stunning of the food I can’t wait to try some of these recipes

This is a delicious romp into nerdy detail–oh, I already said that in the headline. It gives you detailed info on how the painting was treated when discovered, and the history behind it. The lengthy third part offers a very detailed account of the art collecting habits of the Stuart dynasty. This book is wonderful. This is a book I’ve been waiting for for years, as I love the painting. I’m bummed that it didn’t wind up in the Metropolitan in NYC or the MFA in Boston but there we are. I only hope that it doesn’t wind up above the fireplace in some tycoon’s rec room. A must read for anyone interested not only in Leonardo as an artist but also for anyone interested in the evolution of the Leonardo brand, to put it in modern terms. The description of the art market during the time of the. Stuart dynasty is helpful as the trail of the painting is traced through its various locations.
Absolutely intriguing art history. Didn’t want to put it down.

Be prepared for streaking toddlers.” — Booklist “Kousky’s watercolor illustrations provide gentle, natural backdrops in hilarious contrast with Lawrence’s and his mother’s gaudily patterned clothing; the clothes are not only creative but also genuinely laugh-out-loud funny…” — Bulletin”Kousky takes an emotionally savvy look at a mother-child relationship that’s gone a little off the rails… The digitized watercolor and pencil fashion parade strikes just the right balance of inventiveness and awfulness; readers will simultaneously feel for the wearer while finding the broad array amusing.” — Publishers Weekly Read more About the Author VERN KOUSKY is the author-illustrator of HAROLD LOVES HIS WOOLLY HAT, called “accessible and appealing” in a starred review from School Library Journal. To first give compliment, I want to say, Harold loves his woolly hat and the Song Bird are two of my favorites. Loved the stories and the illustrations. This book, not so much. When I first opened it, I thought it was really nicely done . But as I went further into the book, I only like some of the illustrations. Too many illustrations that looked odd or partly unfinished. It was hard to tell that he even was a rabbit. Too many illustrations with repeated over and over that the rabbit had to wear odd clothes. Story seemed more like a kid complaining and the parent was clueless. So by the time I got to the ending, I didn’t like the story or the illustrations.
Loved this story about a bunny who just wants to be naked. My 4 year old thought is was hysterical!

Book Description

Review “Humanity’s survival depends upon our learning to live in harmony with all other species. The second law of ecology is the law of interdependence. Without bees, phytoplankton, worms and trees we cannot live; without dogs, cats, horses, elephants and penguins we cannot be truly happy. We are a part of them as they are a part of us and together we are the planet Earth. Ingrid Newkirk and Gene Stone have done a wonderful service to us all with their stories of kindness and compassion. The book is truly inspiring.” — Captain Paul Watson, CEO and founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society“Thought-provoking… Animalkind will have you thinking about the creatures that share our planet — their astonishing capabilities and emotions, and the ways in which we could improve how we cohabit with them.” — Columbus Dispatch“What Animalkind reveals only reinforces my belief that some of the most brilliant individuals you could ever hope to meet have fur, fins or feathers.” — Alan Cumming, stage and screen actor“We share this planet and the same kingdom with the animals and although we feel superior to them, they have senses that far surpass ours. This book shows how much we have to learn from them beginning with compassion, simplicity and unconditional love. It is a must read.” — Dr. Marty Goldstein, author of The Nature of Animal Healing“With wisdom and eloquence, Ingrid Newkirk and Gene Stone remind us of what we’ve always known, but too often forget: animals are deserving of our care.” — Jonathan Safran Foer, New York Times bestselling author of Eating Animals“Compendious… Meant to evoke both admiration and empathy.” — The New York Times Book Review “This book makes the spot-on case that the future of laboratory research will not be based on four-legged or tail-wagging models, but rather on sophisticated, human-relevant and high-tech animal-free testing methods. As Newkirk and Stone point out, these modern technologies are delivering better human health outcomes and are benefiting patients, physicians and researchers.” — John Pawlowski, MD, PhD, Harvard Medical Faculty Physician“This is the book to buy, read, and give to others so that everyone finally sees why they should respect and cherish all animals.” — Anjelica Huston, Oscar winning actress“A resourceful guide…a treasure of greater compassion, integrity and awareness, Animalkind is both a moving compendium of animals’ remarkable intelligence and emotional complexity, and a manual of all the ways we can stop accepting and contributing to their slaughter and exploitation.” — Joy Williams, author The Quick and the Dead and The Changeling“Animalkind is a much-needed antidote to viewing other animals as second-class citizens and offers a fresh look into the cognitive and emotional lives of other animals. This thought provoking and engaging book will change your view of who other animals are and how you should interact with them in respectful and compassionate ways. It could be a game-changer.” — Marc Bekoff, Ph.D., author of The Emotional Lives of Animals Read more About the Author Ingrid Newkirk founded PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the largest animal rights organization in the world, with affiliates in eight countries, in 1980. I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed this book, and I’m not sure why .It’s written in a really engaging, sometimes joking, conversational way, even when talking about slime mold, of all things, which is actually a literal page-turner. I was moved to tears by the story about a young elephant’s efforts to comfort a dying relative, but was laughing minutes later while reading about crocodiles daintily picking flowers. The history major in me appreciated the passages recounting how the Black Death helped usher in fashion design, and how Charles Darwin helped lay the groundwork for animal rights. The book is a blend of amazing facts about animals’ sensitivity, intelligence and communication skllls, combined with discomforting information about how animals are still tortured in many ways, including for food, clothing, and experimentation, passages that were made all the more poignant after reading about how mice, (common “test subjects”), “sing” to each other ultrasonically. If you don’t already gaze at the birds in your backyard wondering what they’re saying, you will after reading Animalkind.
Ingrid Newkirk, founder of Peta, released her newest book today. My copy is in the mail, but I went ahead and listened to the audio this evening. Peta may be known for polarizing ads, but Ingrid’s book feels like it was written to unite us. Her writing is hopeful and positive about the changes we can continue to make for a better world. The first section celebrates the incredible intelligence of all animals. From their ability to express empathy and love, to how well they communicate with each other and other species. The second part of the book is a forward-looking description of all the various issues surrounding animal welfare. Her fascination and love for all creatures is evident throughout the book and I feel encouraged after listening to it.
This is a very nice read—it flows and keeps you going throughout. For a book about animal cruelty that sometimes feels like a hopeless issue, Animalkind gives me some much-needed hope. This book shows you how easy it is to avoid hurting animals by buying plant leather (apple, tea, and more!) and going to movies that use CGI technology (rather than paying for a movie that hurts animals forced to act—Google the TMZ video taken on the set of “A Dog’s Purpose.”) I am curious about test-tube meat, and am thankful for high-tech organs on a chip that are replacing animals in labs. Animalkind helps the reader better understand animals and why their lives matter (even the ones who seem weird to others like octopuses and dragonflies), and also inspires the reader to do more to help them. I learned how easy it is to change some behaviors while learning a bunch of easy ways to help them (which I can start doing now). I’m giving my copy to my niece who is writing a high school paper on ethics. This will be really helpful to her for school, and I’m sure she’ll learn as much as I did!
Animalkind covers a lot of ground, exploring humans’ use and abuse of animals all the way back to prehistoric times, but it never feels bogged down or pedantic. The authors have a breezy and even lighthearted way of discussing animal rights, which may seem like a depressing topic. But don’t worry—you will feel anything but depressed after reading about trickster squirrels, snowboarding crows, war hero pigeons, and the amazing technological advances that are preventing cruelty to animals on a massive scale in the food, entertainment, clothing, and research industries. While reading this book, I found myself exclaiming aloud several times, “Wow, I never knew that!” Such as the fact that Queen Victoria was among the first anti-vivisectionists, or that eating a vegan diet and wearing vegan clothing dates back thousands of years. One thing I do know is that I will never look at a fish or a bee and other animals the same way again, after learning about the incredible feats they are capable of, such as recognizing themselves in a mirror (fish), or using the sun to navigate (bees).
Ingrid Newkirk is a world changer. And with her new book, she has written another wonderful book to help people change the way we look at and commodity animals.
