Book Description

Review “Thomas Schreiner is one of the preeminent Pauline scholars of our time and we now have a welcomed update to his magisterial account of Pauline thought. Schreiner has provided a lucid account of Paul as God’s chosen envoy for the gospel of God, heralding the work of Christ, and working unto the glory of God. An ideal resource for anyone seeking to better comprehend the teaching and legacy of the apostle Paul.” (Michael F. Bird, academic dean and lecturer in theology, Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia)”Paul the apostle suffered greatly to bring the promised gospel message of God in Christ to the nations. A complex and nuanced thinker, he continues to challenge modern readers. Tom Schreiner has updated his sure-handed, landmark survey of the thought patterns throughout Paul’s thirteen letters for yet another generation of students―a labor of love.” (A. Andrew Das, professor of religious studies, assistant dean of the faculty, Elmhurst College)”With the bewildering amount of modern scholarship on Paul’s theology, combined with the complexity of Paul himself, there is a great need for a volume that can carefully and faithfully guide the way. Tom Schreiner’s volume on Paul fills that need splendidly. Thorough enough to cover the necessary terrain, yet concise enough for both scholar and pastor, Schreiner provides an exegetical, redemptive-historical, and (above all) theologically faithful tour of Paul’s thought. I highly recommend it.” (Michael J. Kruger, president and Samuel C. Patterson Professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, NC)”Tom Schreiner has influenced my understanding (and the understanding of many) of the Pauline letters and Pauline theology more than anyone on the planet! Readers of his second edition of this Pauline theology will learn much about Paul’s theology, his global mission, and his life-changing encounter with the glory of God in the crucified and resurrected Christ. Pastors and students should have Paul, Apostle of God’s Glory in Christ close at hand as they study Paul’s letters and theology. This is a clear, accessible, and informative Pauline theology―highly recommended!” (Jarvis J. Williams, associate professor of New Testament interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY)”The field of Pauline Studies is a moving target. Over the past fifteen years there have been groundbreaking and substantial contributions to the study of Paul’s theology. This second edition of Tom Schreiner’s Paul, Apostle of God’s Glory in Christ continues to be a faithful entrée into Paul’s thought and theology with helpful updates to his clear and well-ordered study. Ever an irenic and careful exegete, Schreiner works with the full complement of Paul’s letters (accepting all thirteen as authentic), demonstrating central themes arising from the text while allowing for tension in the material to stand for the reader to consider. The second edition of Schreiner’s work will continue to be a trusted guide for reading Paul’s theology well.” (Darian R. Lockett, associate professor of New Testament at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University)”This is a delightful book―academically substantive, exegetically thorough, theologically robust, and spiritually enriching. Drawing from his decades of studying Paul, Thomas Schreiner proves a faithful guide to understanding the riches of Paul’s theology, navigating the wide world of secondary scholarship without getting lost in the details of the multitude of debates. Schreiner writes pastorally with the aim not merely of imparting data but of helping us grasp the life-changing message of Paul’s gospel. Following Paul, he helps the reader see ‘the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.’ This is a must-have resource for pastors, students, and teachers.” (Ray Van Neste, dean of the School of Theology & Missions, Union University)”It is always a genuine delight to read Schreiner―he’s clear, concise, insightful, and most of all, pastoral. Writing a theology of Paul requires years of exegesis and serious theological reflection. In the second edition of Paul, Apostle of God’s Glory in Christ, readers are once again treated to a clear exposition and theology of Paul’s thirteen letters. Schreiner’s love for Christ and commitment to Scripture shine through the project, as he rightly sees God’s work in Christ as the foundation of Pauline theology. There is little doubt that this volume will find a home in the classroom and on countless shelves of pastors and teachers.” (Benjamin L. Gladd, associate professor of New Testament, Reformed Theological Seminary)”When I discovered that Schreiner was producing a second edition of his Paul, Apostle of God’s Glory in Christ, my first thought was I hope he doesn’t change it much. The first edition has been my favorite Pauline theology since it appeared almost twenty years ago. I am pleased to see that the new edition has only improved it by offering some helpful clarifications and updating the bibliography. For readers who want a warmly evangelical, extensive summary of Pauline theology that is based on sensible exegesis, interacts judiciously with the major currents in Pauline study, addresses the practical needs of the modern church, and is written by someone who obviously shares Paul’s captivation with Christ’s great glory, Schreiner’s work remains the best choice.” (Charles Quarles, Charles Page Chair of Biblical Theology, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary) Read more About the Author Thomas R. Customers Review:

It’s been almost 15 years since Dr Schreiner’s Pauline Theology hit the classrooms, and since then a number of influential Pauline theologies have joined the conversation. This second edition thus seeks to lightly interact with some of the recent work that has been published (Pauline theologies by the likes of Barclay, Dunn, Thiselton, NT Wright, and Gorman), as well as make his work accessible to a new audience. Schreiner is clear that his purpose isn’t to engage secondary sources, however, there’s always need to interact with various voices.⠀One of the standout features of this book is the full-bodied focus on the themes Paul’s theology. The book is organized systematically by the major themes of Paul’s theology, which in a way preserves the colorful nature of Paul’s theology without flattening it into a sole focus on justification or atonement. Schreiner deals with Paul’s theology of suffering, glory, sanctification, mission, spiritual gifts, as well as the common Pauline topics of justification, righteousness, and law.⠀Even though this book was originally written 14 years ago, this work still speaks into the current hot topics of our day in a fresh and engaging way (New Perspective, women in ministry, spiritual gifts, marriage, slavery). Dr. Schreiner’s theology takes the Reformed view of Justification, as well as a nuanced cessationist position to gifts. All in all, the glory of God in Christ is the center of Paul’s theological solar system.⠀For a modern, engaging, and accessible primer on Paul’s theology, this is the place to begin. **book graciously provided by IVPress for an honest review
