Customers Review:

Reynold Levy’s Start Now is much more than a basic job search book. It’s more than a how to guide, a resume writing template, or a list of interview skills. It isn’t a book for a single demographic – for newly minted college graduates, mid-life career changers, or for those looking for jobs in the non-profit sector (although all in those demographics would benefit from its wise advice).Start Now is more than all of that – it’s an inspiring and thought provoking book about how to go about designing your life.Through enormously helpful advice and information on job search, career change, and employment sectors, the author demonstrates how taking advantage of opportunities, expanding your network, creating resiliency, and a reservoir of knowledge, individuals can successfully build confidence, drive, and resources that will ultimately shift the power from the employer to the employee.Peppered with wonderful anecdotes from the author’s own experience, the book shows how by shifting the focus from asking what you “want to do with your life when you grow up” to “whom do you wish to be as you mature”, you can design a life with meaning and integrity and find productive and fulfilling work, and ultimately a life worth living.Start Now looks far deeper than a transactional search for paid employment to a more essential and more important question about who you really want to become and gives valuable advice on how to get there. Because Start Now is a book about investing in your own future, taking control of your own destiny and designing your own life, it is a book about looking forward, and grasping what life has to offer. It is a book, I believe that goes to the very question the poet Mary Oliver asked in her extraordinary poem The Summer Day : “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”I highly recommend Start Now!
Most career-advice books seem to be written by people who write such books and articles for a living. It is unusual to encounter a book written by someone steeped with career success who is, moreover, more interested in helping the reader than extolling his or her own successes.Start Now is a welcome exception. Reynold Levy has decades of experience in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors, has been engaged with every facet of the hiring process from both sides of the table, and has absorbed life lessons through thousands upon thousands of encounters with professionals on every rung of the career ladder, from aspiring assistants to retiring CEOs.It is hard to imagine a better use of one’s money, and several entertaining hours, than this book. Between its covers is a treasure trove of seriously considered and researched, and elegantly articulated, ideas for how to lead a more fulfilling life and pursue a more rewarding vocation. All offered, with candor and humor, out of a generosity of spirit and irresistible desire to help others. It is a book I enjoyed and will return to repeatedly as a reference and guide.
Reynold Levy’s advice, “The best time to look for a job is when you are securely settled in another one”, might be a startling and unfamiliar career framework to some. This advice reflects a positive, pro-active and ‘if things are good now, they can (and should) be even better in the future’ call for reflection and action. By sharing his experience and personal stories that showcase impressive achievements and successes as well as disclosing discouraging challenges and setbacks, Levy urges us to demand the most of ourselves. This takes hard work in the spheres of current job performance; personal and career exploration; and conscientiously building a network of mentors, guides and supporters.Reynold Levy’s broad range of successful and impactful leadership positions in the private sector, non-profit sector, the arts and academia is certainly unique. Guided by a moving personal philosophy and set of professional ethical values, Levy’s practical and compelling advice is immediately actionable no matter one’s current station or scale of future ambitions.Invest in yourself by reading this book. The return on your investment will be remarkable.
Start Now delivers relevant, useful, and evergreen career advice by way of compelling storytelling. That is a feat! I found the book to be a colorful and quick read, in large part due to the stories that Mr. Levy generously shares among the pages of helpful guidance. Two key factors set Start Now apart from other career advice books.First, Reynold highlights the incredible professional opportunities that the reader can realize in the Third Sector (or nonprofit world). He had dedicated decades upon decades to serving others, and implores his readers to consider adding meaning to their work and lives by doing the same. It was a refreshing and well-needed reminder.Second, Reynold guides the reader to not only secure meaningful work, but also to enjoy a meaningful life. The acknowledgment of the inevitable interconnectedness between how we spend our days working and how much we enjoy the time we spend living was spot-on.Highly recommend!!
