Customers Review:

This book is the first that I have read to deal with the topic of consent for middle grade readers. It explores the friendship between a boy and a girl and how that is disrupted by misinterpreted signals and pressure from friends to behave a certain way. Told from two alternating points of view, there is no “bad guy” here – just two people fumbling towards adolescence. The book also deals with parental expectations and how kids can begin to open conversations about forming their own identities as individuals. Highly recommended.
Incredible story with realistic and relatable characters. It’s a young adult novel but I would recommend this book to anyone who is or has ever been middle school aged. Couldn’t possibly recommend this book enough. Barnhart has outdone her self!! What a book!!
I was excited to see a Middle Grade book that handles topics of consent and sexual harassment, but I was disappointed with how this one played out. It was not appealing to my 10yo, but if a kid reads it, they’ll find a story that’s supposed to be about sexual harassment but creates sympathy for the aggressors more than the victim. Girls who read this may also resist the recurrent “not-like-other-girls” sentiments and the negativity towards girls who like fashion or are interested in cute boys. The most troubling, however, is the victim-blaming apparent in the final sequence after (SPOILER) Sammie confronts her aggressor and he goes missing, instigating a city-wide search.
The critics are correct: “That’s What Friends Do” is a meaningful, even important book for young people in a complicated time of life, in a complicated world. But even better, it’s a fun, well-written, and even exciting book to read! The ending is emotionally satisfying and will ring true to all of us parents who have counseled our children about how to navigate friendships. Strongly recommended!
This is a beautifully written story that felt quite real to me. The characters are likable and each struggles in his or her own way to navigate an increasingly complicated world. Because it is written from alternating points of view, it is easy to understand how the situation between Sammie and David develops. I was hooked from the first page!
