Book Description

Review “A well-informed cautionary tale on alarming issues that show no signs of abating as disinformation continues to proliferate.”―Kirkus Reviews “While the rest of us have been processing our shock at the fake news crisis, Sam Woolley has been anticipating what’s coming next. This a mind-blowing and essential book for a future that’s practically already here, whether we know it or not. This book scares the hell out of me, but if we listen to Woolley’s wake-up call, then I also have hope.”―Jane McGonigal, author of Reality is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the WorldLong before most of the world had ever heard the terms ‘disinformation,’ ‘trolls,’ ‘bots,’ or ‘fake news,’ Sam Woolley had begun to systematically study these new, destructive forces eroding democracy in the digital age. The Reality Game synthesizes his deep and original knowledge on this subject into a readable and compelling book. Scholars of computational propaganda, policymakers in Washington, Brussels, and the Silicon Valley, as well as all citizens of the world concerned about truth, facts, and democracy must read this book.―Michael McFaul, Professor of Political Science at Stanford University and former US ambassador to Russia“This is a crucial book for understanding online misinformation, disinformation, and outright propaganda. Like a good doctor, Sam Woolley has given us an excellent diagnosis of this problem and laid out a treatment plan. Now it’s up to politicians and the public to heed his timely advice.”―Tim O’Reilly, founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media Read more About the Author Dr. Samuel Woolley is a writer and researcher specializing in the study of automation/AI, emergent technology, politics, persuasion, and social media. Customers Review:

This book is an outstanding summary of the potential catastrophic results of emerging technology on our society. It’s not a doom and gloom book, though. The author ends each chapter with solutions. As the 2020 US election grows nearer and new technology is released almost daily, this book couldn’t come at a more important time.
The widespread use of Internet technologies and data to manipulate people and, in fact, what we consider to be reality is a current threat to much of our society and way of life. This book is a well-organized, well-written examination of the many technologies currently being used as digital propaganda tools (social media, images and videos, chat bots in social media spaces among others) as well as a look at upcoming technologies (AR, VR, XR, sophisticated AI) and their potential for similar exploitation.Illustrated with actual events and speculative scenarios, this book is captivating, thought-provoking and, at times, downright scary.Timely and fascinating, I think this book should be read by anyone interested in how companies and “bad actors” are using technologies and data to influence our thinking and actions. It’s a sobering experience but the author offers concrete ways to address many problems. This is such an important topic and a great overview of the many issues we face with emerging technologies.
Good overview of how propaganda works with few decent examples of how actual operations work. Spends a lot of time postalizing about how governments are stupid and how the author thinks everyone should take his advice. His advice may be sound but I expected something a little different.
Sam Woolley provides an exceptional diagnosis on the real world impact of disinformation and outcomes when citizens are not informed. After reading this book, I’ve been telling my circle influence that we need to take collective action, and at the very least, stay informed!! This topic will be a discipline taught in high school and university in the near future. Highly recommend this as a 101 to these topics! I look forward to his future publications.
I read his first book, computational propaganda and enjoyed it. This was a much easier read and I would recommend it! Thank you Sam. I hope you continue your research and good work!
From one of the early thought leaders in this space, this book covers what decision-makers need to know and can be a clear guide for anyone seeking to find a firmer grasp on the future of our information society. Insightful and well-researched, well worth reading.
Just another liberal book whining about the 2016 election, in my opinion. He thinks traditional media should be the arbiter of truth on the internet while referring to conservative thought as disinformation. I do not recommend this book. I wish I could get my money back.
