I was surprised to see the gun hoarding and violence or threats of violence that seem so modern. Dr LeeAnna Keith is a brilliant historian. Her views in this book – help us understand how the Republican Party has so drastically changed and how it was once an organization that was leading radical social change and was not afraid to do so violently. I knew about part of the thread of this history – the connections of John Quincy Adams and the Massachusetts thread of anti-slavery (post presidency in the house) and his relationship to Lincoln. I knew about John Brown and Harpers Ferry. I knew about Thaddeus Stevens – rep from Pennsylvania . But that is all what seems like North East and a East Coast history. What I didn’t appreciate until reading this fascinating history was the regional role the mid-western anti-slavery zeal was and how it played out. This course that ran centrally through Kansas. and other newer and more western states. And the gun running and violent organizing. It’s just crazy. A great read – highly recommended. |
