I know there will come a time when my four year is less receptive to my life advice, so its even more important that I act now by helping her learn how to cope with the ups and downs in life. This book helps me do just that. It teaches kids how to navigate the tough emotions that they may feel on a daily basis with numerous individual strategies taught through clever and playful animal themes. My daughter also likes how the sister character (Lily) is somewhat of a superhero. My hope is that my daughter will too feel empowered by being able to tame her own emotions and to heal herself thanks to lessons in this book! This book is engaging for my daughter and my nephews from a storyline and illustration standpoint. I’m particularly happy with this book from a development standpoint.I’ve been reading child development books like Medina’s “Brain Rules for Baby” where there is a strong emphasis on your identifying, naming, and helping to manage your child’s emotions. I’ve learned that kids who act out are really kids who are facing troubles managing their emotions. The books primary focus is the management (e.g. naming and coping) of emotions via super skills. The author is credentialed in this space and it shows in the book’s messaging and approach. Love this book! Great coping techniques for kids when they are stressed, helping them to “name it to tame it”. My 6 year old son loves animals and any chance to move his body…so he had to try out all of the coping techniques while we read. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking to teach their kids how to positively identify and then manage their feelings. This book has great exercises for children to do when they are overwhelmed with emotion. My son regularly has bouts of anger or sadness. He is very sensitive and sometimes we don’t really know how best to handle the situation. This book teaches kids to cope with their feelings and practice remaining calm. My kids really like the illustrations! They gave it the thumbs-up! I am a kindergarten teacher. I am always on the lookout for great interactive read alouds for my classroom. This book really fits my needs this year, as I am focusing on the social emotional development that many of my students need. This book was a perfect read aloud to start the conversations going about feelings and emotions. I used it during my R & R time to talk about what we can do when we are feeling down. We have gone back and practiced the animal strategies over and over since reading it. From the get-go, you know this book is going to be fun and interactive! My Sister’s Super Skills allows for a serious topic (emotional health) to be discussed in a fun and light-hearted way. I love how the author encourages readers’s to not just READ the book, but to act out each skill. It’s this interactive approach that makes this book unique and fun for kids, and it’s a way for parents to start having those really important conversations about our children’s emotional and mental health. 5 stars from this former counselor! Excited to see what’s next from a lauren! My Sister’s Super Skills is a must have to help young children identify and manage their emotions in a fun and engaging way! Kids will love the bright, cheerful illustrations and the animal actions connected with each coping skill! As a teacher, I see students regularly who struggle with how to deal with their emotions, and this book is great way to support them during those tough times! I highly recommend this book to anyone who has or works with young children! “Smiles are contagious, so shower them around like rain!” – One of my favorite quotes from My Sister’s Super Skills! This book helps children learn how to navigate their emotions in such a fun and well-written way. I have started to put this book into rotation reading with my daughter at night. She is captivated by the colorful illustrations! It is also a great reminder for us adults to take a step back and breath. Highly recommend! |
