They often aren’t respected or heard because they are young. They need mentors. They need a trusted guide. They need the wisdom of experience to speed their journey toward early career success. As an executive coach working with young leaders I found the core strategies from business veteran Gary Vien to be spot on. His 3x3x3 applications to speed the SMART goal process was easy to apply. There was an extended section with specific guidance from dozens of successful business executives and corporate leaders which I believe would speed anyone’s journey toward career success. You could read this book in a weekend, but the lasting strategic value will help you for decades. Newly graduated, or years into your career, there are takeaways and insights to deepen your ability to move past obstacles and become more trusted as a business leader. What a wonderful book on leadership that is perfect for young and aspiring leaders. The book is written in the spirit of a mentor who has been there and done that sharing advice that every aspiring leader or manager should hear over and over again. Interestingly, the author and I share two resources in common that we were given when we were young and that he references in this book, Saxon White Kessinger’s poem The Indispensable Man and Dale Carnegie’s classic How to Win Friends and Influence People. Common sense advice that everyone should read!I think this book would be highly appropriate to give as a graduation memento or as a “congratulations” for getting that promotion gift. It is a comfortable read, full of recommendations, relatable quotes, and anecdotes. I would describe this book as what I call a “sunburn book”, that is I might open it up sitting in a chair by the pool and “poof” the next thing I realize is that I have been so distracted by its contents that I get a sunburn as I keep turning pages. Well articulated and organized thoughts on keys to leadership and shared experience s from a wide range of senior executives. Must read for young executives and potential leaders. Leadership books can be tedious and complicated. This is the opposite! Gary uses common sense and a strong dose of optimism to help anyone who is, or aspires to be, an effective leader succeed. Gary used easy, relatable examples that really drove home his points. The chapters weren’t lengthy and it was so easy to grasp and remember the concepts. I feel motivated to become a better leader after reading this. You’ll devour this motivational book in a few hours. With nuggets of inspiration and tangible takeaways, “Lead or Get Out of the Way” is just what every professional needs to take his game up a notch. Spoiler alert! As a communication professional, I couldn’t agree more with the advice from Gary’s father, “Take another English class.” Humankind has been around many eons. Yet we still keep loosing our way. Vien pulls together great insights (and a few needed reminders) important to every leader or aspiring leader. True value – think big time ROI for your reading investment. Great read! Wonderful advise to future leaders. Also, good recommendations for everyday life! |
