What a wonderful book!! We all know Abe Lincoln from his Presidency, but I had no idea he was so compassionate to animals. Abe finds Honey, who has a broken leg. Abe mends it and they become lifelong friends. Then Honey saves Abe when Abe gets trapped in a cavern. The best part is that it’s a true story. My daughter loved getting insight into Abe as a child, and the notes and timeline at the end of the book are really interesting. Most of all, this is just a lovely story about a boy and his dog. The illustrations are gentle and beautifully done. This book is destined to become a classic.
Though this is a children’s book, geared for ages four to eight years old, the format is such that it will appeal to any age group. Book is written and illustrated beautifully to encapsulate the joys, hardships, and concerns for nature and animals of 7 year old Abe Lincoln, growing up in pristine Kentucky, around 1816. As the title of the book hints at, the story reveals ultimately how one act of kindness, is repaid, and how a close-knit caring wilderness community can unite. This is a story that I had never heard before. The maps included in the illustrations, and the historical timeline at the end of the book are great and has sparked in me, an adult, a new interest in wanting to learn more about Abe Lincoln’s life. I hope to soon visit the historic park and area where Abe was born and grew up. Thanks for such a great book, and I highly recommend it for everyone.
I’ve never read a book about Abraham Lincoln’s early days until now. This is the perfect book for children to get acquainted with the sixteenth president of the U.S.—as someone who was once a child like them. The lyrical text coupled with the whimsical illustrations make this book a delight for children and adults. You can’t help loving adventurous Abe and Honey—a great dog companion. This book is perfect for schools, because it has so many topics to discuss (presidents, nineteenth-century mills, animals, Kentucky, spelunking, kindness). A marvelous debut. I can’t wait to see what else Shari Swanson produces.
A tale of Abe Lincoln’s early years in his birth state of Kentucky, the author uses well-researched local words: pawpaw bush, soapstone pencil, cane-pole whistle. Additionally, her descriptive words and phrases paint a wonderful picture: “I’m fastened, ” “darkening woods,” ” torches parting the night,” ” bumping and scrambling.” Together with charming drawings, this is a sweet nicely structured story for young readers and listeners.
This is a sweet story about how Abe Lincoln’s “rescue dog” saved the future president’s life. Animal lovers in particular are going to love this book!
Swanson takes us immediately into the life of a kind boy running through the hills of Kentucky. I loved reading about Abe’s kindness to animals, his adventures, his scary night in the cavern. This story is told spot on and will resonate with kids of all ages. My daughter especially loved the part when the whole village trusted the dog and followed Honey.
Very sweet and very human. I learned something more about Abe Lincoln than I knew before.
HONEY is the adorable story about the love between a boy and his dog. The best part is that the boy is Abraham Lincoln!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Inspired by true events, HONEY gives readers a brief glimpse into the childhood of one of America’s greatest presidents. Young Abraham Lincoln was a curious, kind child who loved animals. When he discovered a dog with a broken leg in the forest, he mended him back to health despite being only seven-years-old. The two became fast friends spending all their time together. Honey is more than just a pet, he becomes a hero when he saves Abe from being trapped in a cave.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀With its engaging illustrations and heartwarming storyline, this little-known tale about Abraham Lincoln is a perfect read aloud all throughout the year, but especially for President’s Day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Thank you to @blue_slip_media for sharing this sweet book with our family in exchange for an honest review. All opinions of the book are my own.
