There seemed to be too much overlap. I would have appreciated more about the culture handed down to the Ottomans and the culture that survived after them. I did get a better view of the actions and problems of the ottomans in the Mediterranean and Western Europe during the times they were in power so I guess that is the most I could have expected. Good introduction to the Ottoman Empire. I also read Suleiman the magnificent of the same series to enhance the experience. Well written and researched, entertaining while informative. One thing I like about this series is how much information is packed in a short book. Presents a condensed history, easy to read. I use it more like a mild reference book. This book did nothing more than list the leaders and related family, along with some brief mention of all the wars. Like many other civilizations they start off in a tribal format, went to cities the on to a single main ruler (with others involved, of course) then on to an expansionist period and finally a gradual decline.There was a whole lot of brothers killing brothers to prevent them from getting to the throne. As with any culture there were both good rulers and bad rulers and even some horrific rulers.One thing that makes this different, though, is that there was the ‘Sultanate of Women’ where women ended up actually being the power. The book also points out how the harem was actually not the stereotype people have today.Another interesting point is that under Osman III Christians and Jews had to wear recognizable badges and clothes, predating the Nazi approach of the star the Jews had to wear, showing how history can repeat itself even in specific details.During WWI there were some 1.5 million Armenians killed by the government which establishes the Ottoman/Turkish empire right up there with governments that massacred people.The book is well done and is complete with maps, photos, and references. How does Captivating History do it every. Like they are mind readers . Books i wanted to read but never got around too.From the introduction brought back memories . The Ottoman Empire was once called “the sick man of Europe “. I remember to this day missing that question on a Western Civilization test at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, MS. But, actually it was Turkey that the caption read. Not one & the same really since the Ottoman Empire was much bigger. As a student your responsible for all material.Great read but so many names . Would hate to know I had to list all the rulers & their dates of ruling. But, for an empire to last for 600 years something had to right. With giving & taking from other cultures it survived. Kinda shocked nothing was said about the French in Egypt & the Ottoman Turks landing a army there which was annihlated by Napoleons army. That’s just a minor point because all readers have a different perspective on the subject at hand.Kudos once again to the Captivating History staff on another job well done. I love these books. They are the “Cliff Notes” for anyone who does not want to venture too far into a particular person or period. They are detailed enough to get started on a subject but not so much that they become a dry history book found in college or high school. Quick read with lots of information.
