Book Description

Review “Tishani Doshi brings all her skills as one of the world’s best poets to this lovely, beguiling, brilliant novel.” – Gary Shteyngart, best-selling author of Lake Success“Every sentence in this achingly beautiful book carries multiple meanings that resonate across the pages. Tishani Doshi uses language like a blade, cutting through our defenses to illuminate what it means to love, and forgive, and truly exist in the life we have.” – Maaza Mengiste, author of The Shadow King“A beautiful gem of a book full of heartbreak and joy. A deep exploration of what it is to be within family and what it is to occupy your own skin and the ebb and flow between the two.” – Nayomi Munaweera, author of What Lies Between Us“A shattering study of disaffection and belonging…[A] concise novel of staggering depth…[D]isturbing, deep and utterly extraordinary.” – Bidisha, Guardian“Radiantly written…this superb novel from Doshi ranges over family secrets, trying to do the right thing, and the sheer contingency of life in all its richness and uncertainty.” – Phil Baker, Times (UK) Read more About the Author Tishani Doshi, an award-winning poet, dancer, and novelist, lives in Tamil Nadu. Customers Review:

Interesting. Grace returns to India after many years abroad when her mother dies and there, much to her surprise, discovers that she has a sister, Lucia. Lucia, who has Downs Syndrome, was hidden away from Grace and others because Grace’s father felt the family could not care for her. Grace opts to take Lucia from her residential facility and move her to the beach house she’s inherited. There, they adopt a pack of dogs and find a wonderful housekeeper in Mallika-until she’s not. This doesn’t have a propulsive plot but is more a character study of a woman finding herself and dealing with difference. Grace moves back and forth between the beach village and the city and then travels to Venice to see her father, with difficult results. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read for fans of literary fiction.
I enjoyed this quiet yet beautifully written book as if I were being taken on a journey into a slice of India. I love Doshe’s poetry so it is no surprise I enjoyed her book!
